I guess thats why they call it a hobby. Feeding juvenile tridacnid clams, or training fish that eat live food to accept frozen foods.
Online ordering can have problems, but a 4" maxima like that can sell for around $200 at some LFS.

Yessong,
I don't have any zoas in my tank. And I don't want any either! I'm trying to keep it LPS. I did pick up a favites yesterday that I'l be fragging if you want a piece. Let me know!

That's exacly why I ordered the clam for $44. I haven't seen thme for under $100 around here, and I know this one's cultured.

I've put the clam on a piece of rock (twice), and it keeps moving to the sandbed. I guess I'll leave it on the sandbed!

No Zoos! I guess some burgers will have to do.

They know where there happy, i had one that would lay on its side, IMO its best to put a piece of rock under the sand and place the clam on top. I asked if the byssal was intact is it? let it attach to the rock before moving it.
Also i keep new clams in the sand bed for a few months. And in your case It will be much easer to feed in the SB.
When they jump off rocks they can hurt/kill themselves or other corals on the SB.
Maxima's can handle a little more flow then croceas, if it gets too much flow it will jump. So if its attached to a small rock and you place it where its not happy it will close before releasing and jumping off the rock work.
BTW, Maxima's do very well in the SB if there attached to a rock
Here is a pic of my Maxima that's attached to a rock under the SB

yessongs, your clam looks pretty small. But it does have some unique pattern. I have my 1.25 inch maxmia in the sandbed too. So you think putting a rock under it is a good idea.. Maybe I will try that.

ctxmonitor, Yes that pic was taken when it was a juvenile 2.5" it was target fed.
The smaller Tridacnid clams,Croceas, Maxmias do much better when there attached to a rock. It also helps protect there byssal gland (foot) from Predators.
As for the pattern, it is unique True black Maxmias are very rare.
I had two from Sean. The one above i sold for $250 The other died in a rock slide, it was more of a dark brown. The one above was black.

Thanks Kris. I can't wait till he pairs up with the pistol shrimp (the one I have or the one I'm supposed to get Friday). The symbiotic relationships in SW tanks is part of what drew me to the "Light".

Kris, they do need a lot of calcium. The larger clams gigas, squasoma, derasa will deplete calcium real fast. These clams will be a poor choice four your tank, they will out grow a 65g within 2 years or less. You keep SPS so a crocea or maxmia should be fine for some time.
Tony from Reef Exotics in LI has some nice clams. I bought this from him for $45 and seen one with almost the same pattern in Manhattan selling for $209

Thats a great price for a clam that nice. If I do decide to get a clam it will be a very long time from now. When I do get one I want to make sure everything in the tank is perfect. :D

For now I think when the SPS I have grow out will be enough to cover the entire top of my tank and that should be enough to use up tons of CA.

Here's the replacement "pistol" shrimp acclimating, sent by eTropical. This one at 1" is a little bigger than the original.

If the goby ever decides to pair up with one of the shrimp, they would make a cute "orangy" couple.

I havent gotten the buttefly to eat anything frozen. But I have seen him nipping at something on the rocks(for now its completely ignoring all the aiptasia!) The purple tang was bothering him for a while(but she bothers everyone) now he is fearless and is all over the tank so as long as he's eating I think he will be fine.
