Having lived in coops most of my childhood, subletted condos most of my early adulthood, and now own a coop myself, I have always had a tank and never had a problem. I am subletting a coop right now until reno is finished, and had a 150 on the 19th floor for a little while, and now have two 60 cubes in the subletted coop. In my new apartment we just got board approval to put a 240 inthe wall. They just require you to have it covered in your policy. Where are you getting your information?
As for the weight of the tank, the 144 will weigh about as much as a really full bookshelf (maybe a bit more, but not a whole lot.). If you aren't worried about a big bookshelf, I am not sure you should stress too much about this. Ymmv
