The best thing for you to do is get a doser and dose all 3 part throw the doser . Cal reactors are no good and are nothing but problems and only help with cal not really alk. Doser you set it and forget it, thats it .

This cannot be any further from the truth. Who ever gave you this information obviously does not know how to use one. Only helps with cal ??? :smash:

Just curious to the guys with large systems why you havent tried calcium reactors or dosers? Would think it would make it easier .

I have a calcium reactor and as with anything it requires setup and understanding how it works. With that being said it is a great way of supplying calcium/alk to your system. Does it make it easier; pretty much the same as anything else in this hobby. However, it is definitely more cost effective for large tanks with large demands.

well thats what i mean.I have only a 92 corner and think the calcium reactor i have is the best piece of equipment i have EVER owned. It needs to be dialed in from week to week but its a small hassell compared to dosing everyday

I agree with Tomanyfrags . If you go on reef2reef, were the big baller of sps are, no one there uses a cal reactor at all every one uses a doser. Think of it like this if your not home and the co2 stop working , or the tubes get clouged , will your reactor shut it self down ???? . The answer is no it wont and most likely cause a tank crash, as if the dosing pump get clouged or somthing it shuts it self down untill its fixed...

why wont it shut itself down? I have mine on my reefkeeper if the ph drops to low it shuts down. Im glad the "bigballers from reef2reef use dosers but all the "bigballers " i know on the island use calcium reactors

I been doing this for a very long time my friend , just because i dont post here that much doesn't mean anything . I had over a dozen or more tanks and had cal reactors and all have problem down the line . See i have high end sps and wont trust a cal reactor on my system at all . Dosing is more stable and accurate then a cal reactor bye far .

with 300 gal. volume and sps dominated, i was using brs two parts with a double doser and manually dose mag as needed. it became an annoying chore making the alk and cal every 2-3 weeks. i find it to be more time consuming with the dosers.
i've been using a cal reactor for a couple of years now and for a lazy reefer like me, it's the best thing since slice bread. breaking it down for cleaning and new media every 6-8 months is more my style. yes you do have to check and adjust every now and then in the beginning but once you got the sweet spot, that's it....just testing every two weeks or so to make sure things are in order.
those who complained about fuzzing around with the regulator should look into an electronic co2 regulator from aquariumplants.com. no more fuzzing around with the bubble counter.

but you made the statement that calcium reactors dont help with alk when indeed it does? Plus calcium reactors media is natural when the doser uses chemicals,What dont you trust with calcium reactors? if you have it connected to a controller you have nothing to worry about

This is too funny. All the big ballers on r2r. Lol. Just like the 3 part dosers that malfunction and dump entire gallons of Alk into a tank. All pretty much opinion and choice. Big ballers on r2r. That was good.

Also I love how a sort of simple conversation on mr always becomes a pissing contest of some sort. I can pee far , lol

Most of the "big ballers" with sps dominated tanks usually end up dosing two part AND reactors AND kalk. I agree that if you have a good reactor (i.e. geo) with a good regulator and controller it will be extremely stable and reliable. On my 225g my colonies aren't even close to grown out and I'm dosing 115ml of alk a day. I will eventually run a reactor.

so am i considered a big baller then?
300 gal., acro dominated, cal reactor, kalk reactor, and three parts every now and then....hmmmm i guess i can be.....lol.
