Just wondering how many people have had issues with cyano in there system. I am speratic with a month cyano free and a month with sandbed covered. I ve done everything to figure it out but ive come to live with it and accept it as a part of my system. It has happened with every tank i have ever had and i just combat it with suctioning.

All systems get some cyano from time to time. I find it to be cyclical and even seasonal. As long as it isn't out of control i.e. choking out things I don't get overly concerned with it and follow the normal husbandry approaches to keeping it in check --- siphon it out, blast the rocks to remove detritis, change up and / or increase flow and test to make sure nothing is radically out of whack. Cyano is a tricky and odd thing and sometimes appears when conditins dictate it shouldn't.

i'm battling it now for my very first time, i was kind of hoping keeping sand clean and water changes every two weeks will allow it to die off. I also cut my feeding now to twice a day and decreased my lights...lets see what happens

Dr. Tim's waste away work wonders on cyano

Thanks for this suggestion in another thread. Ordered a bottle from Amazon, and am on the 2nd week of using it, at half recommended dosage. It cleared up most of my cyano, only a small patch (~3"x3") left in a corner. Also my overflow was all gunk'd up as well, cleaned and cleared. The best part? No crazy skimmer overflow like Red Slimer Remover. Amazing stuff. Thank you again.

yeah man I get excited when I see a product that works and is not snake oil but does what it claims, I have been very impressed with all Dr. Tim's products. It cleared up my cyano and I was battling it work a few months before I discovered this stuff. Glad it worked for you Widdy!

Red Slime Remover is basically just Erythromycin. Like any antibiotic I wouldn't just use it every time you see red slime because if you don't knock it out 100% during a cycle you'll just end up with a resistant strain of bacteria. You're better off treating the cause or at the very least removing as much as possible if you have a large outbreak and then dose the antibiotics to kill off the last bit. Just don't underdose or do less than 2 full doses to make sure it's gone.
