I am not a big fan of NWA, been there many times and have bought from them over the years. I have been on a buyers boycott of them for many years, and refuse to shop there (except for the most dire emergency).

Some of their tanks have flatworms so buyer beware. Their tanks and store have a lot to be desired actually.

I recently went to Absolutely Fish (this past weekend), now there is an aquarium store worth going too. Great prices, quality, and selections.

They do have frag tanks and they just set up a huge section for QT. Looks really clean and good. I did not count but there must have been at least 30 or 40 QT tanks. I personally think its great that they took that step. Its definitely an improvement.

I like that one on rt 10 too...Hanover Pets or something right?

I also had some bad experiences at Abs. Fish - had horrible advice for a newbie...

New World is OK- I have to buy my Phyto from them since they are close by and man are they overpriced...

I guess it comes down to you own experiences in the stores - once bitten twice shy (or whatever it is they say...)

This is one of the rules of reefkeeping, NEVER EVER take advice in an aquarium store, even though I am sure that some of it is good. Generally they are lacking in experience and almost never do their homework since they tend to live in their self created reef "bubble". Plus, they have ulterior motives, :Up_to_som . I went into Beitals once, and asked their prices on Tunze pumps. They looked at me like I was crazy. I then told them about the pumps and they insinuated that I didn't know what I was talking about and to consider a Rio pump. I almost slapped the guy (I think he was actually the owner). My experience in these stores now consists of: give me that coral, bag it, pay for it and leave.

MR exists to provide an alternative to the "education :)lol2:)" provided by the stores.

Thanks for the segway Shaun :flower:

Unfortunately I don't have any experiences to add to the NWA conversation, however, the single WORST store I've ever been in was Beitals. I went in one day to get a Foxface Rabbitfish. The owner (another one with the personality of a slug) told me they don't have any Rabbitfish (which was what I asked for). I brought him over to the tank with the Foxface Rabbitfish and I asked, 'what's that?'. He replied, 'that's a Foxface'. I chuckled and explained that Foxface was the type of Rabbitfish. He began to argue with me.

Another visit there (I should have known better) I asked the owner if he would be able to do any better for LR than $13/lb :bigeyes2: (yes, you read that correct, no typo, $13/lb) which was the price it was marked. Now I was organizing a GB for close to 1/2 ton of LR. You'd think somebody who's in the business would budge a bit (seeing that he had to be making close to $10/lb). I told him we'd take them right in the boxes as delivered, he didn't even have to handle it. No dice. AND, he was obnoxious about it. Total attitude.

Last time I set foot in there. BTW, the Foxface died about 3 days later.

I've been to New world, when it was at 8th st and now at 38th st.
I think they do have some very nice stuff sometimes and good condition too. but my advice just like with any other places, I agree with solby. u have to know what u buy be4 buying. Do the homework urself before buying.
NW is bit bit on the expensive side, but hey like they said "it's manhattan".

I actually like NWA. THe people were pretty nice to me the other week. I mean, they have to pay rent...they're in manhattan. I was treated very nicely even before buying something and although I said I was only looking around. I didn't feel pressured. While talking to them about the health of the ocean reef, they geniunely seemed to cared about the hobby from a bigger perspective than just making a quick buck. Heck, they even showed me their filtration system and opened the store 30 mins earlier to let me have a look. Besides the price, I have no problems with this place.
