OK- so I am planning on taking apart my tank :anger2: in order to get the mantis that is terrorizing my tank...how do my plans sound?

I am planning on having two 5 gallon buckets - one for the rock, one for the water. Rock goes in one, corals in another. This shouldn't take long b/c my tank is pretty small...

I grab the rock (or course it has to be the large one...), bring it to the bathtub - and pour club soda down the holes. Supposedly this is supposed to irritate the shrimp and he will shoot out of his lair.. muahahahahahaha :skull: :skull: :skull: .

Then quickly refill the rock into the tank, put corals back into place, turn everything back on...and hope for the best!

My real question is - the large rock has many polyps on it - will the soda water harm them? I expect a little dieoff, but I'd hate to see an entire zoo colony die, etc..

Make sure the zoas close up completely before dousing them with soda water. They'll be safer in that position.

Never tried clubsoda dips. Id rather drink it. However a regular FW dip will usually be enough to make the mantis freak and get jump ship (rock). Keep the mantis in a smaller tank. People have the coolest mantis nanos.

Glad you're finally getting him out. If you have an extra bucket it will be easier to get the mantis out (without picking him up.

Things for you to consider:
Have a bucket of used tank water to rinse the rock before you put it back into the tank.
Have a small tank set up to dump the mantis in. People will gladly pick him up in the next day or so. Also, they might actually volunteer to come help. 4 hands will be better than 2!

Once you pull out your corals, then the rock, throw your corals back into the tank. That's one less bucket you have to deal with. (you could throw them into the old tank water you're going to rinse the rock with)

Good luck. I hope he's a peacock!

Wear thick gloves!!!!

ugh- I have been nervous in my tank when moving around frags for months now! I have a set of thick arm length gloves...

I wasn't thinking of a club soda dip - just dumping it down the manis' lair..

Fresh water dip for how long if that doesnt' work?

I think noodleman is in line for the mantis 1st...if I get him alive that is (I will try). He's a smasher - maybe 2" long at most and brown in color w/ some specks on his shell. Verrrrrry Smart- he knows my voice and comes out when he hears me - almost like he is daring me to come and get him...grrr.

well I have to take all the rocks out anyway since this one is, of course, the largest one and the one that supports everything else in the tank!!!

LOL Just be careful, they make tunnels all through that rock, and those coralife gloves help but they're not 22 cal bullet proof.
