New World Aquarium Update...

Tonight I went to New World and I'll never go there again except for exchanging the dry goods I picked up tonight for some live stock. Any comments on live stock from New World would be appreciated.

What happened was that I went to buy some fittings for a pump I'm changing out and I talked to some guy there, forgot the name, but he seemed very nice. So I asked him if there is a discount for manhattan reef members and he had some choice words to say about manhattan reefs. After he told me the price on the salifert test kits I told him I was going to hold off and maybe check the web. He then proceeded to tell me and I quote "I better not find you buying these on the internet after I spent all this time on you"

Prior to this he advised me that I was keeping my ph too low at 8.2 and advised me to raise it to 8.6. Further, when we were talking about skimmers I mentioned deltec and he looked at me as if I had "two" heads.

Just want to be clear. I'm not saying this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I am a newbie and have a lot to learn.

After I take back the filter socks, and calcium supplements he sold me and exchange them for live stock I will never darken their doors again.

I support local fish stores and want to see them succeed but not at the expense of getting insulted when I mentioned that I was going to shop elsewhere.

Return policy is horrible. Didn't see it posted anywhere in the store so unfortunately I only have store credit.

Live and learn. Wish I read this post earlier.

i better not buy these test kits, since your trying so damn hard to sell them to me.
My response would have been:
":yo: How about you stick the test kit where the sun doesn't shine!"

I also do not go to NWA because of the owner.

At the time one of the better known "gurus" was helping me. (An author of many an article that are still quoted today!) Well... When I mentioned him, he had some very crude remarks to make about him, just based on his "appearance". Add to this the several other "choice" remarks and I refuse to step into his store.

In my opinion there is no excuse for arrogance and being nasty.

The main reason why stores dont work in Manhattan is the HIGH RENT! A storefront in the worst neighborhood starts at $5,000 a month! (Trust me, I looked!)

Add to that electric, payroll and all of the other expenses involved and the fixed overhead for a store is roughly $15,000 per month, minimum. On top of this you need the start-up capital to buy the equipment, initial livestock, dry goods and signage. Probably looking at about $120K to start-up buying out goods from a store that closed PLUS the 2-3 month rent deposit. (Even higher because an aquarium store would be deemed high risk!)

A possibility would be to turn an office in midtown or lower Manhattan into a store. But you are looking at rents that are starting at $3,000 per month for the kind of square footage that would be needed, and most leases state that you CAN NOT have >>>A<<< fishtank. (I am paying $3,600 for my 1500 Sq. Ft. office on Maiden Lane!)

Even with the office idea, a store would need to sell a minimum of $25K per month at a 200% profit margin just to break even.

ok, lets play nice.
I'm not for or against NWA.
I find that NWA has decent live stock a little bit on the expensive side and awide range of dry goods.
I don't mind going there in a pinch for items, but there really is no reason to be rude or obnoxious to customers at any time.
If anyone that is associated with NWA is on the board "we" the customers would like to now why the workers are so rude. I would imagine the Reefing community within the NY/NJ/CT are your main customers, and several which are memebers of this board and R.C. would like to know...

This is your chance to voice your comments.

Why would they be against MR? we are their customer base. they should rather be positively involved with us like the other vendors are.

Solbby: Yeah wish I had said that but quite frankly couldn't believe what I just heard.

I'm going to say something to the owner about this when I exchange the dry goods.

Could be an isolated incident. NWA is still in business so on the whole it must be doing something right.

I'm not against local aquarium shops. I go to Reef Encounters in Jersey and Absolutely Fish in Jersey but will never patronize NWA because of what happened. Unfortunately I have to go back to NWA to exchange what I purchased yesterday. Wish I could get a refund but not an option since they do not refund even un opened dry goods

Deep; thanks. The guy I spoke to told me that there is a lot of bad information on MR and most don't know what they are doing and give new york city a bad name in the reefing community. His opinion.

My retort was that there were many knowledgeable and friendly individuals on MR and I'm proud to be a part of the community.

I don't want to mention names (got his name on my receipt) but he told me he was once active on the boards (RC & MR) but he was in disagreement with a few individuals.

Albert: It doesn't make sense to alienate someone especially after that person tells you he's an MR member. One would think that he should make it a positive experience so I could relay it to others.

MR member or not it doesn't excuse his comments.

The owner is a real piece of work. I knew him originally when they were located on 8th street. One day i walked in and saw a coral i wanted to buy and jokinly asked if he could give me a discount. He immediate said "f--king chinese people always want a discount". I couldn't believe he said that and just laughed it off and left.

Its a real shame because they could be a really great fish store if only he straighten up his act.

My 2 cents...

My experience was similar, he made a very rude/crude comment about a buddy simply because of his appearance. I dont care if they have a $5 per coral sale, I refuse to give my money to someone that judges people by their appearance AND obviously has no problems verbalizing it.
