So i have no idea why but out of no where a few of my pieces that i have had for awhile are starting to STN. i have cut them to stop it and haven't seen any progression yet. why would this happen? nothing has changed in the tank all params are the same. one day a week ago the temp got to 81 degrees but that shouldn't be a big deal. any ideas?

i have also noticed alot of my sps have almost a pastel color look to them. the PE is great but the color almost looks faded. i have a very clean tank and i only feed every other day do you think switching to every day feeding might help darken there colors up a bit?

Well,
usually STN start from elements
imbalance , params swings and such. But beeing is this hobby for so many years i still queston to my self WHY, what did i do wrong..i see mature colonie start RTN overnight..
It kills me sometimes to loose corals, but.. my friend this is a bad part of this beatifull hobby..
i just take coral out and frag it hoping for the best..
Did you notice any ALK drop?

yea i know this sucks everything was going just fine. no alk drop at all its been 8.4-8.7 for probably 7 steady months calcium 450 consistently i have a very low nutrient system and i was reading a couple articles contributing that to STN events. i think i am going to start feeding more, because my corals are lighter in color and i feel like they should be much darker. i guess i just have to play around a try different things.

I dont use carbon at all. but i do run GFO 24/7. right now it is off jackson because i was going to switch it out for this upcoming water change. do you think i should leave it off line for awhile? and i dont use bio pellets, all i do is 15 gallon water changes every week, feed every other day, run gfo 24/7 and pretty lightly stocked with only 6 fish

nope no AEFW jarrett, i know that for sure i already inspected all the corals. the only ones affected right now was a BLUE ice stag that ive had for awhile(fragged that today), a rose milli that was nicely encrusted on this rock. only a small part of that one has died off, i don't know if i should frag that yet. and then my Vermiculata but that has been STNing for awhile now ever since my torch coral fell on it and stung the **** out of it.

i think i am going to start feeding more. i am really anal with keeping the tank clean and i think its making for an unhealthy environment. and the lightened pastel colors of the corals kind of give me the impression of low nutrients. who knows though lol.

Bla your not the only one, I tested this morning with Salifert and everything was perfect.

Left for work and just got home to find 3 corals RTN. Of course it's 3 of my nicest pieces.

Checked all levels again and they are still dead on.

Checked my temp on my rkeeper an it was 78.2 like always. ( not sure if I had a swing during the day though)

Checked salinity and I was actually a little on the high side. 1026-1027 it appeared. Tomorrow I'll check the calibration. (refractometer)

I just guess its one of those things like everyone says is bound to happen. They are all fresh cuts that were added around a week ago.

yea i dont know, i am not letting it get to me though i still have some beautiful corals thriving and happy. i think i just need to tweak things to get it running better. i am deff leaning towards feeding more. so thats going to be my first course of action and hoping i get some good results from it.

i only have one reactor. and never needed to run carbon, the tank is mainly SPS dominated and the water is so clean i was afraid to strip it with carbon and end up bleaching the corals. so i have always ran just GFO but i do have carbon on hand just incase its needed.

same way i found red bugs, i stared at each coral for 10 mins really close lol, and took shots with my camera. the way its STN isn't like round circles from bite marks that you would get from AEFW. and i have other corals in there that are acros that are doing fine. so i don't know. it was only those 3 corals i mentioned.

I believe it was from your temp going up. I also wouldn't remove them unless you are 100% sure they are death. I added SPS 3 weeks ago. Had little color on the tissue of frag. In a few hours. The two frags I added turn white. I was shock but did notice my temp from the other tank was about 3 degrees cooler than the other tank. I saw tiny tip of coral that was still alive so I left it in the tank. After 3 weeks I notice tissue is coming back. First I thought it was brown algae. But everyday I see a healthier tissue that starting to look like it first did when I bought it.

thats not a way to check for AEFW. you cant see the worms they are transparent and match perfect to the corals skin. also not every time you will see bite marks especially if they are babies. you nee to take each STNing piece out and dip for a few minutes and see if any worms come off. trust me i went through it and my corals were doing the same thing until i dipped and found them
