Ontop of them being glorified light timers they are useful in monitoring your water parameters. Temp/PH/ORP/Salinity/ECt can be monitored without doing the basic tests and you can see how your tank is doing online with nifty graphs and a history. You can also set up your controller to run heaters, wavemaking capabilities, ect. It all depends on what you want out of them.

I think the neptune Aquacontroller is the only controller where you can program it off your computer/iphone/ipad. RK's only send out RSS feeds about your water parameters and you need to do any adjustments on the unit itself.

I still don't understand why DA hasn't incorporated any web access to the units main programming, but are coming out with a 200$ reef monitoring device that only tells you what your temp/ph is. The RKL does the same for 200$ + you get 4 outlets to program lighting, ect. I heart DA for being a US based company but their choices on product development or lack of proper product fixing/development and amount of problems with the units made me not get one this time around.

First decide on what you want out of the controllers. Getting a RK elite or the higher end apex while only running a temp probe and controlling your lights is a waste of about 400$. Both neptune and DA both have cheap starter units that work great for about 120$ that do everything the big 500$ controllers do and can be upgradable to get what you want out of the units.

Hey.. I got mine from Russ up at saltwatercritters.com was a good price from him. I went with Neptune mainly because of their tech support and I am not disappointed.

Apex is awesome! Neptune customer service is great, they can access your controller through remote access if you need any assistance and they're always available and very prompt in responding to any issues. They also have a very nice interface and new leak detecting gadchet coming out that will be a nice piece of mind to have.

I've had my Apex for over 2 years now and I had their AquaController III before that for a little while and always have loved the Neptune products. I even have an AquaController Jr. on my 5G nano in my room.

I love my Apex. It's easy to get on the internet and easy to program, once you get the hang of it.

Russ aka masterswimmer aka Saltwatercritters is the man. He'll actually answer the phone if you call too :)

Speaking of, it you call Neptune for support on the Apex, a human will actually answer THAT phone too. So yeah. No brainer.

I don't understand these controllers.. I mean... Other than temp? Ph? I guess ph would be nice to know all the time.. But I'm sure like most of you, I'm watching the tank all the time... Changing water often, usually once a week and monitoring levels at least once a week...
For me I just dont think it will have any benefit. I have a digital temp but w all the water I have these controllers really make no difference.. My ai's are controlled, tunzes will be next... And until they have a pc that monitors everything I don't think I'll be getting one.( Well I'm sure the temp feature is good if on vacation and w emails etc.. )
