I think the wrasse was trying to pick up food or something from inside the clam and doing so triggered the clam's natural reaction to close up, which caught the fish by the head. IMO the fish asked for it lol, but if he lives then it will be a lesson well learned.

+1 .. Dude u shouldn't have tried to open the clam it would have open on its own and the fish was a goner anyway ... So u lost a $35 fish and a $45 clam.. Should have let nature tak it's place..lol sorry 4 ur loss .. But next time just leave ur hammer hands out of the tank..

The smaller one isn't such a threat but this bigger shelled assassin can kill any of the fish in my tank with one thunder clap!!!! Lol what a nightmare , a mantle that can dismantle.

sorry for your loss, its pretty bizarre but cool at the same time.

If you're afraid then just get rid of the clam and buy smaller one, seen a bunch of 2" clams for a reasonable price plus selling the big one would get you more than enough to buy it. Kinda just saying that cuz I'd be interested in the one in the second pic lol

From my experience in a similar but slightly different case, the two will engage in a deadlock. Years back, my I lost a Copperband ButterFly to a Electric Flame Scallop due to the dead lock, I was surprise to find the scallop actually was able to to pull the CBB into the and leaving the tail for to discover the tragedy.
