I think my i hippo has ich. I shut my lights off for 3 days to deal with an algea problem and when i turned it back on today, my hippo does not look good. seems to be spots all over his body and does not seem to wanna eat. I dont get how it survived the drastic temp changers, no water movement and no lighting of sandy for 10 days BUT yet gets stressed out for not having lights for 3 days.

This might be my first case of marine ich in the past yr+. How do i deal with it??

take the fish out and treat him in a 10g tank with either copper or hyposalinity for 3-4 weeks. To me treating with copper is safer than hypo salinity.
Let your display tank go fish less for 5 weeks for the ick to die off because they will have no fish to host.
When Tang fish get stress, they usually end up getting ick.

I have not had a fish died (other than those that jump out ) since I learned how to quarantine new fish and treat them with copper .

good luck

When Tang fish get stress, they usually end up getting ick.

I'd go with hyposalinity and keep all fish qt'd for 9 weeks and DT fishless for 9 weeks

This is the thing i dont get. If tangs are prone to ich, even if i do all of the above, wont they just get ich yet again IF they get stressed out again?? so taking all the fish out and treating them with either copper or hypo will "cure" them now BUT there is still a chance they might get it again when stressed out correct??

If that tang is sick I am sure the stress involved with chasing it around the tank and placing it in a new tank would do more harm than good and may end up killing it.
I would keep it in the tank and try foods soaked in vitamins. Try anything the tang will eat. If you keep the fish eating you will be fine.
You can also try neon gobies and cleaner shrimp. They man not eat the parasite on the fish but they may get it off the rocks.
This worked for me when a new sailfin tang spread ich to my hippo, my clownfish and my gobies.

I never remove my fish out of DT..I just soak food in garlic and vitamin C,Selcom. once they start eating they can fight it off..My last ich was when I added a Regal angel in my DT last 8/12, I didn't QT my Regal she came down with ich, I just raised temp and garlic she's the only one covered with ich. I was scared that my purple tang will get it but it didn't and all my fish was fine.. that Regal eats like a pig!!

Dr. G?s Anti-Parasitic Rx frozen fish food is a welcome idea in the hobby and we?re hoping it works. Most parasitic treatments merely treat the water hoping for delivery of medications from absorption or from using copper chemicals that are devastating to sensitive invertebrates. Dr. G?s took the approach of treating the fish food with the medicine to treat parasites like ich, brooklynella, uronema, crypto and oodinium to name a few.

This frozen, medicated food uses Chloroquine phosphate as the active ingredient and is recommended to feed as much food that would be consumed in one minute. D.r G?s recommends feeding daily for up to three weeks to treat parasitic infections and to repeat when new fish are added to your system allowing for three weeks between treatments.

Although the company calls the product reef safe, to avoid any possibility of damaging your invertebrates and corals, they recommend removing any food that falls on corals with a turkey baster. Another option is to use a chemical filter or phosphate remover to rid your system of any excess medication left in the water column from uneaten food.

The frozen food is made with preservatives, gels or binders and comes in a 100 gram (3.53 oz) flat pack. The ingredient list includes: Atlantic shrimp, squid, aquacultured oysters, oyster eggs, scallops , clams, octopus, Pacific cod, gut loaded mysis and krill, rotifers, freshly hatched baby brine shrimp, adult brine shrimp, arctic cyclops, green/red unroasted nori, garlic, freshly harvested phytoplankton and Dr.G?s reef essential vitamins and amino-acids.

I use vitachem twice a day when I thaw mysis. I chop up a sheet of mysis into squares and thaw it in a shot glass with the vitamins. Then add to the tank using tongs discarding the juice.
And I feed sheets of algae on a clip.
I didn't used to use vitamins but a couple months ago I lost a yellow tang.
It is a liquid and I'm not sure how much is actually delivered to the fish. But if any does it is cheap insurance.

If you treat w hypo u will never get ich in the reef system unless u introduce it..
I will put any of my 8+ inch tangs in a 10 gallon tank.. Come scare it to death.. It will never get ich! Ich is not a cold.. It's a parasite! I'll bet any amount of money on any of my tangs.. I still can't believe people believe such myths

Once tank is ridden of ick, the only way back in would be to reintroduce it....tank needs top be left fallow and fish treated with your method of choice to get rid of it....i personally don't have the time or space so I do have ich in my system but it rarely ever shows since I keep everyone healthy and well fed

some people have luck with garlic, or fresh water deep. but they do not always work because Garlic is not a ick treatment. But copper and hypo salnity proven to always work.

Also, sometimes tang fish get even more sick or more ick when being treating them in a very small qt tank as well. Tang fish requires a lot of space to swim and if they do not get enough space in the QT, they gets stress even more.
