as stated, it is more an individual store/management/ employee problem than 'corporate wide' ...

If there was a law, it would probably ban many, many more hobbiests, (that don't have a clue) than retail stores!
I spoke to an employee at the Petco by me (Rocky Point, LI) about a Sailfin Tang that had ich. It had been in their store for 3 weeks with ich. I asked why he didn't QT the fish (he was the employee that worked the fish section). He told me it was company policy to just observe the fish, that his hands were tied as far as QT or further treatment. He wanted to QT the fish and treat the fish but wasn't allowed. They are not equipped to QT fish. They're systems are "zoned". A couple of tanks on each system. There was no way to QT sick fish. This "individual" knew what needed to be done, but was not allowed to. Sounds corporate to me. That was the last time I went in there. (I only went twice, the first time to compare prices (noticed the sick fish), the second to check on the fish. Think I bought a Frisbee for my dog.

Petco atleast in NY and NJ. Qt there fish 100% sure of that.

I spoke to one of the guys in Fish department in Petco. He told me same as Peteboyny said. He's not allow to use copper or treat any fish. So Marklugo23 where you getting this 100% from. Maybe Petco doesn't have right resources or right managers at EVERY Petco. But something should to done about this.

Your right , and that SOMETHING is that you Should just shop elsewhere , I think some of us are expecting a lot from a company that sells good priced pet products and just may be trying to make profit on bigger items rather than that little fish that didn't cost them much to begin with !! That's why we have lfs shops dedicated to our hobby !!! Unfortunately not every place will be the same !!! But ask yourself one question !! Would you go to dunkin donuts for coffee or would you go to the coffee cart on the corner !! It's as simple as that .

Listern, I got the best LFS that I go to. Maxmium Reef is the only place where I would buy my fish. I won't walk in another Petco again. But seeing something wrong I will speak my mind and say what I feel. If something wrong doesn't mean you should walk away. You sound like if their someone in need for help in front of you you would walk the other way.

Yes you can speak your mind but I don't recommend you hold your breath about this thread landing on the laps of petco CEOs , I'm sure you can understand my point if you think about it for a bit but NEVER would I turn my back on someone in need!!! Pectos prices aren't cheaper. The reason I went in in the first place was to compare prices to a local mom/pop pet store that has been in the area for as long as i can remember, (Brian's in Rocky Point). He is an all-around pet store...dog/cat food, reptiles, birds, etc. Brian's has always been known to be on the higher side price wise. Petco was more expensive than the mom n pop shop! I still buy my dog food at Brian's. Support local business! Even if it is a little more expensive.

On a side note...a thread like this pops up every now and again. Its always the same story. So it's really no big surprise people. The best way to combat this type of irresponsible behavour is to BOYCOTT these types of places. Maybe a letter here and there explaining why you choose to take your business elsewhere. MAYBE...the brass in these companies will change when they realize its affecting their BOTTOM LINE! Remember, the Supreme Court has ruled that a corporations only responsibility is to its BOTTOM LINE! Not to its employees, customers, its vendors, or the livestock it carries. When shareholders loose money is when things change.

It was already stated, this is one of many threads posted bashing petco or petsmart or petland. Regardless of the company, these threads are all the same, the bad conditions in which these companies treat their fish. It's amazing how the only thing some of you have accomplished is to get on each others nerves and nothing more.

Bottom line, if you didn't spend your money at any of these stores fish dept., things would change or at best no fish dept. Just a bit for thought.

Not that I buy fish from there, but at least you can see the ich at Petco.

Im sure it's not on purpose, but some LFS run a trace of copper or lower salinity and it masks the ich or velvet. You think u get a healthy fish, then you find out otherwise.
Just test the water from your LFS with a refractometer or a low range copper test like that from Seachem.
This is why all my fish go through a qt no matter where they come from.

When I started out researching this hobby. I stopped at all the big box stores to look at tank sizes and see what fish were there and look at the equipment available. One of my early stops was the Petco in Levittown. When I told the guy I wanted to do salt water and coral, he told me to go home and read more, and then read some more. He pointed me to there book section and talked to me about what goes into running a marine tank for a bit. My first fish came from that store, a very shy Royal Gramma. It's been doing great since I brought it home. I did QT it for a few weeks while my cycle was going. I've been to other Petco's and they are not as nice. The one in Levitown did have a melt-down and they were running air-pumps for a while in all the tanks... haven't been back there since that...

You must be posting to boost your post count. Where do you think we're referring to?

The managers don't care. As someone else said, the sick fish say's in the tanks until they're dead. They then put them in the freezer and they are recompensated for they're loses. How do you think they stay in bussiness? Count all the sick and dying fishes you see? How about that dying$150 achilles tang and those battered and druised bird wrasses, blind ich infested fish etc. And the price tag stay the same even if you ask for a lower price before they get to that stage. The sad part is out all the marine fishes collected for the hobby, less than 20% will get in the homes and less than 5% will survive in the homes.
