because people buy LED fixtures without actually taking the time to research them fist..there is a lot of junk out there and if you don't do your due diligence to find a quality brand than shame on you ;)

the sense I get talking to a lot of people is that they think if they throw some LED's over their tanks than they will automatically have success coloring and growing corals...not the case as many people are finding out

Some people are upgrading to the new fixtures, some like myself hate LEDs after having 3 of the top fixtures, I should add I got my hands on a Vega, so now make that 4 fixtures and I hated the outcome every time. I said no to LEDs after selling my other 3 fixtures which were AI sol blues, maxspect razors and the Radions. I only did the vega because I got it for 250 with the controller.

+1

People look at money and money only not the quality. Cheap LED are just cheap in $$ as well as quality of components and that is why the results are just not convincing.

i like mine and the color it produces, but ive used t5's pretty much the whole time, ive used maxspect, ai, and have a nano-box now that has 6 different color temp leds, my sps have no problems nor my zoa's, but once again just use to t5's

I liked my Ai Sol Blues, sold them to do an upgrade. I would still be running my rapid led diy if not for some wiring issues. In fact I'm running one of the diy units on a 20g interim tank, turned down of course. My only difficulty was taking pics that reflected what I was looking at under the leds.

The colors of my corals, even the colors of my fish were washed out looking. The worst part was the growth rate of my corals, which almost halted even after a year of using LEDs. People were trying to tell me "oh it's your water quality or your doing something wrong" but I would say I guess my 20 years in the hobby I have no clue. I switched back to T5's on one tank and everything started coloring up and growing after a month, I have now switched back to a MH/T5 combo on my other tank and its been roughly a month and everything is looking great now and starting to show the growth I expected.

^---- This.

All the lights everyone argues about are usually fine lights if the rest of your husbandry is up to snuff. t5s, Mh, leds are all great if the reefkeeper is competent.

That being said, as for the LED hating, If you are still anti-led I am not sure you have seen some of new Leds out there. The writing is on the wall and I know MH and t5 will die hard but arguing the technology of LEDs is not going to leap over other lighting in the near future is grossly underinformed (just look at the trends over the last few years). I dare anyone to mess around with the Vertex Illumina and not find a balance they love (all colors dimmable so you can get the exact look you want, if you like T5s with all those nice bulbs, I would bet you can match it or come closer than you think. Smoq's LEDs also look amazing in person. Those UV leds really caught up with the pop that t5's give to my eyes ( I feel the same way about them that I do when I first saw coral under actinic LEDs). /endrant

Let's see if we can keep this civil and not go the route of too many other lighting threads. :thrash:

I heard great things about rapid LED. http://www.rapidled.com/ Build your own. The only thing is that its a double edged sword. On one hand you can make it specific to your system and tastes. I also am thinking of heat sinks from Makers. http://www.ledsupply.com/makersled.php More uv, more blue, more drama/ intensity, and its variable in configureation. change the positioning, output and location location of individual lights. On the other hand, if you consider everything and leave room for growth then you pay as much as if you bought a prefab just with out the satisfaction of having done it yourself.
Personally, I think that I will make the LED switch gradually. Shipping costs will prob. kill me but I will buy piece mail to build specific to my pain in the ass 76 half round tank that rectangular lights realy dont fit.
I got into this hobby to build my own slice of the ocean. Making my lights is the next step.

james if you go onto some other forums you will see a lot of those big reefs with the best LEDs imaginable have switched back to T5's and MH's. LEDs might make your tank look good if you are looking for that blue led pop, but I want so see growth and PE and my corals color up to the best of their ability. I have never went snorkeling or diving and seen corals pop in the wild. I like the natural look.

Taking pictures that accurately reflect what tanks look like in person under leds is ( for some reason way beyond my knowledge) difficult at best.

Jaa, I can't speak on your experience but I can tell you I had excellent growth and color with LPS and SPS using Evolution LED's (Chinese grow lights basically). The ratio is 2x1 blue to white. (20k, which to my eyes was too blue but I couldn't argue with the growth or color).

I am going to build a new setup from rapid-leds as my next project for my new tank so you will be seeing yet another set of LEDs up for sale.

i can show you, great growth under any type of lighting, not speak of but show you. and how long your in the hobby ive learnt dont mean anything, ive seen some crappy tanks from people who have been in the hobby along time, and if ya aint got pic's it didnt happen

people fail to realize, when switching lighting that the corals will have different affects, and people are so use to plug and play from t5, mh that they dont realize the output of a led is more significant that the others because of the focal beam, same with t5's will you have the same effects as with a junk reflector or a single peice bent for all the bulbs ? and why do people use so many different types of mh pendents ?

I think you will see that change (people with large tanks switching back and forth). I am not a lighting expert, I am speaking only from experience with tanks I have seen with my own eyes, not anything exclusively from the internet.

My PE was never very good for whatever reason, I didn't attribute it to my LED's but to my clown goby and other factors.

Reef-tanks and diving and snorkling are pretty different, the color on corals IRL on reefs is not even close to what they look like in our tanks. Nothing wrong with the natural look at all and this is all about personal preference, if you tried LED's and don't like them, more power to you. I just don't get the "hate" of something that clearly works for a lot of people and is getting better by the month. I cannot speak about many SPS as I have never been to the South Pacific.
