I'm thinking of removing an AGA overflow box to gain some room inside the tank and sealing off the bulkheads for that overflow box.

I was wondering if anyone has done this and what you did to close up the bulkhead holes.

My options are:

  • Get a thick piece of glass and silicone it to the inside of the tank covering the holes permanently.
  • Keeping the bulkheads in place, attaching valves outside of the tank and keeping them closed
  • Using the two holes for the return
I would imagine there is more pressure outside the overflow box than there is inside.

The tank is a 125g (72 x 18in).

Is this safe to do?:turtle:

Thanks,
Kris

I would just leave the bulkheads in place, slip in short pieces of PVC and plugs on the wet side. They're flat so they will basically only extend the PVC 1/8", unlike caps. You could cut the PVC short enough that it only comes out a bit past the bulkheads.

if you do choose that route and remove the overflow box... just get some glass silicone the hell out of the bottom and the sides... press down and apply a decent amount of pressure so that the silicone flattens out. This will make a seal around the holes and not allow for any water to pass through.

get threaded bulk heads and pipe plugs, basically the same as jimmy said but less bulky. if your removing over flow box, install bulk head with flange on inside. you can plug from outside and you won't see anything in dt.

Thanks everyone! After some more reading (Googling) it seems the bulkhead is the best route for the fix.

Seems that using glass to patch the hole can create uneven pressure at that point causing stress and cracks. Only way I'd feel okay doing that now is with a new pane of glass covering the entire bottom :lol2: I think this is a great fix on a shorter tank, with less PSI on the bottom pane, but at 2 feet tall it's going to feel risky.

Ziggy, looking forward to the pics.

I also thought about using the two hole for the return, but worried about back flow (don't trust check valves) if the power goes out.

so this are pics how I did it on my tank, one side is closed with nuts on the bottom for clean look in side of fish tank and other side I use two bulkheads to drain it skimmer overflow box. hope this help you to make decision.
