It's not just about "If you don't like the price move on"

At some point we must realize that some sellers are taking advantage of folks.

Whose fault is that? Well, every buyer should do the research so they do not get scammed. So, no, it is not your/my job necessarily to do price, etc research.

However, I first and foremost, want to be a part of a community.

What is the point of having threads to help people learn about the hobby, and maintain thriving tanks if we also let folks fall prey to scavengers (harsh?).
We already give our perspective on which skimmer is worth the $, which lights are good, etc. Isn't all of that related to helping people research and develop a sense of worthiness?

Either way it is educational.
No one NEEDS to come to a forum to learn about how to maintain a thriving tank.
That's what books are for. I have a library full of them. That's what schools are for.

However, I enjoy being able to come online, chat with folks, and enjoy the sort of human experience (virtual, and yes some times we meet each other and chat for hours).

I feel it is good to ensure folks know that while SW tank/hobby is an expensive hobby, certain things do not NEED to cost a lot.

It's all about how we build the culture.

There are TRUE SWAPS out there- if you want an organized sort of thing.

Additional, here on MR, we have the DBTC, and folks that sometimes post various coral frags for free.
There is always the infamous 'networking'.


Btw, my feelings of duty to educating folks and hoping being aren't being scammed, does not go towards the aggressive folks that try to scam sellers.

Additionally, recouping costs is one thing, going above and beyond say...100% replacement cost is a diff. story. I usually just go into trading my corals/stuff at that point.

i might be responsible for starting the "low ballers will be called out" posts But here's the thing -- i was tired of people offering $100 for an almost brand new elos system, for example. If you can't afford or aren't willing to pay close to the asking price, move on to the next sale item. Don't waste time by low-balling. People have told me they don't post for sale items here because of how bad the lowballers are.

These types of threads have been popping up on forums for years. People have actually fought over names, "lineage", alternating skirt colors on zoos, etc.. It's ridiculous. Buy what you like and don't worry about the names. (i forget the names when i buy zoas anyway, so they do nothing for me :d).

That said.. If you don't like the price, move on. If no one likes the price the item won't sell. It's pretty simple. Stop complaining. Stop worrying so much about things you have no control over. People are going to ask $100's for corals. It's the way it is.

to me $20 a polyp is nothing compared to some polyps being $500+ for a crazy looking zoa. but hey look at this world everything is like that "FAD" freaking for god sake pizza is $2-2.75-3.50 in some places. but you cant complain cause you have to eat rite? i dont think people should piss on other peoples pricing cause its what they think its worth to them or just the market value at this time, look at the freaking bus prices for example its 2.50 now like what the hell.. not to get off topic but anyways if you dont like the sellers price then why comment on it. just keep browsing threw.. no need to posty on his/her page and put them on blast.. if anything PM them and let them no or just leave it alone.

It may be for some lol but you can't even say anything , I remember a mr member flipping out cause he was selling his ai lights at a touch below cost because he only used them for a week and then ai lowered the price big time and the guy gave him a quick FYI and he flipped out on him and I had to post the article from reef builders and he flipped out on us lol , bottom line is if you don't like the price feel free to ridicule the guy for being greedy and outrageous and then move on lol , I think instead of recouping your entire stock value per coral , you should keep it real and share the coral so it becomes commonly grown and the price collapses !!!!

Agreed. The real reefers will grow out and give away or sell at reasonable prices. Or perhaps TRADE. (I know,, crazy concept)
The scabs will continue to act like they have a storefront, employees and rent to pay.
I personally will not deal with the scabs.
It's pretty simple for me.

To me it's not about coral being expensive (per newest rant thread about this).

It's about the price gouging and lack of community education about pricing (this is what supports the price gouging).

$20-1000 coral is fine if that's the actual general going rate.
It's folks charging $40+ for a rasta polyp when multiple threads currently exist that sell them for $10 or less. These are people that consistently sell well above market value (AND do it REGULARLY which IMO is a real problem.)

I got mine for $5 per. from someone that grew it out.

Surely, that person made more than whatever their original polyp count cost however long ago when prices were higher, because selling at such a low cost ensured that they would sell more. It also meant that now everyone has rastas, the wealth was made and shared.

And yes, I do agree...if you can't afford market rate then wait till you can or make friends that can share with you. There is no shame in it. It's a hobby, we're in this by choice.

obama reef care if you have 15 rastas or more you have to pay 10$ per polyp tax.. so you let one go and have 14 your in the clear, now every tank does this you have many unemployed rastas,they all go in front of marine depot to wait for a plug to pick them up for half the price because there is so many.. obama driving down the worth or corals since....

Funny , I got my Rastas for free from a member who had grown them out and onto another plug and I got 10 polyp of em , as they grow I will trim them when I feel it is time and I will begin to give them away or trade em as I do with the rest of my corals , you won't find a person on any forum that will tell you that I sold them corals !!! I learned early that the trade system will far outrun the sale system hence why I also give away or trade my anemones lol really folks we need to encourage trading over selling , this hobby is expensive enough on hardware and lighting !!!
