I don't think it matters if it is exactly 5 gallons, unless you are using a 5 gallon mix box?

Why don't you just fill it to where it will be still able for you to move the pail to dump the water with out making a mess, and then mark the line with a black marker. Then mix in your salt keeping track of how much salt you are using until you get to the SG you are trying to achieve, record the amount of salt you used.

for future mixes you are good to go: fill to line + dump pre determined amount of salt.

^^^yeah these old folks(paul b, alfie, swimmer, and polywise....) they don't even bother testing the salinity when they mix ....they just dip a finger in there and taste it....they can tell exactly how much salt to put in....kinda like an iron chef....measuring are for rookies....lol.

Naahhhh, I test salinity by grabbing a bare wire while putting my other hand in the water. If it's fresh no problem. If it's salt I'll know very quick. ;)
