I find that when I go to bed at night I always wonder if my tank will be the same when I wake up?!?.

It has happened more often than not and we all know someone who had a tenant pound Down the door at 415 am only to tell you that the water is now in the apartment below , and with a neck shattering head spin it all starts to come together as your eyes explode absorbing the image of exposed coral and live rock and even worse , a water line that's pressing its way down!!!!.

With rimless tanks that seem to be held together with nothing and homemade sumps and rigged pumps it's almost as if it's a game of time , my question is ...... Do you have an emergency back up plan ???? If so lets hear it , I think we all should have something planned even if it's a system or group of buddies willing to open doors for you late at night when disaster strikes ............ Better to be three hours early than 1 minute too late!!! Plan ahead .

What's your plan?

Awesome topic! I have a 30g rubbermaid i could probably grab my fish and drop them in. Buckets are always handy. I also have my 10g quarantine setup, but that would only be good for some corals and maybe a fish or three. I always have about 15g of sw ready and 20g of ro/di. Right now that rubbermaid has 15g of sw in it too in prep for an upcoming aquascape. I have a stack of towels by my mixing station. Definitely good to have more though. I also really need a bucket head. Been planning for one for a while. We should put together a check list like we do for power outages. I'm sure there is a ton I haven't considered but just talking about it has the gears clicking in my head which is great. In a panic I'd be a chicken with no head.

A few weeks ago I went out for a bike ride before work. I got about 15 miles out and my cell phone rang. It was my cleaning lady who informed me that water was cascading through the ceiling from the second floor to the first. I told her to go upstairs and look at the tank(s)...(120 gallon and a 30 gal frag)....she said they look fine but there is water everywhere. I told her where the main water shutoff is and she closed the valve.
Before I went on my ride I turned on my RO to make water. Well the "waste" water line popped out of the sink drain and was spurting water all over the bathroom floor. Lesson learned.

Sucks man. I have mine feed down like two feet through the pipes. I dont want to mess with drilling the drain since its only a rental. But you might want to look into that.

I keep all my empty salt buckets and i always have 55g salt water ready in case of emergencies. I only have one reef tank, so if that one leaked, I'd move the fish in my FOWLR tank into buckets and put my corals in that tank. If the FOWLR tank went, I'd put the fish either in buckets or in the saltwater reservoir. Then I'd sit down and cry.
The next day, I'd replace the tank.

I need to ask myself why I'm even replying to this. First, I hope you didn't just make a several thousand dollar late night purchase of a piece from your downstairs neighbor's art collection! Let's say you are away, chances you won't get there in time anyway so just call your insurance company who will probably call servepro. So you do catch a slow leaker, anything faster and you'll be worried about more than livestock, you'll need to fill all the buckets and extra tanks you have as fast as you can and start tossing in things. This might give you enough time to grab something bigger from wallies or petsmart... You will lose things including perhaps your wife. You'll want to be able to get water out of the tank quickly which might mean simply having a 1 1/2" vinyl tube long enough to reach out the window, but it might mean a spare pump too. Your garden hose will take at least 45 min to get out and syphon down your tank, so forget that 5/8" won't cut it. I'm sure there is more I could add; a properly designed system should never catastrophically fail.

Your only mistake is using the word .... Never.!

Plus I am the wife and I'm almost a senior citizen. Therefore, I am allowed to cry (lol) and I've been around long enough to know that sh** happens! I might lose some stuff, but I doubt I'd lose everything. Also, I have a garden hose that is used only for water changes, so that would only take a minute.

But, on the other hand, I am somewhat tech challenged and plumbing gives me a headache. I'm sure your system is designed better than mine, but I do love this hobby!

My plumbing sprung a leak nt too long ago. (Manifold). I was thankful i was home and caught it. Unfortunately i wasnt able to tell where the leak was from initially so everything got displaced into brutes and i only had couple of fish so they all went into the qt tank. Def. not best feeling not knowing where or what was leaking but it was a simple fix
