I'm looking to get a decent generator this summer. Was considering a standby, but too costly and the installation is about the same cost as a mobile one.
In short, no backup plan at the moment.

Well that's the goal of this thread , if u don't have a generator then it would be wise to find an alternative method for your tanks survival .

1) battery powered pumps
2) backup battery for circulation
3) extra Rodi water cause you never know
4) hang on to those empty buckets for livestock transport
5) some heat packs that u can use to keep things warm
6) an empty cooler is always good to have around
7) Plastic bags for fish in case you gotta scoop em for travel
8) and last but most important, a good list of local reefers

Hey if anyone remembers , we had a hurricane that has put many reefs into the darkness and if we knew then what we know now , we would be better prepared a second time around !

Get a handful of fellow reefers and get to know each other so if u ever need a hand , you won't even have to ask.
Even your local lfs may help u if disaster strikes.

Get prepared and be ready, nothing is fail proof and we all know Murphy's law always applies to reefers .

Now would be the time to find a generator, people aren't jacking prices up yet. If buying new is option they are on shelves at almost any home type store around
Wouldn't be worst idea to get gas cans while your at it, that was a secondary problem last October during sandy

Definitely now's the time to plan for the gas cans as well.
And the third thing to plan for is the gas stations running out of gas for our generators. So definitely buy a gas station and only sell to other reefers.

NOW you're all set ;)

Somehow this turned from "HS! My tank has a catastrophic leak," to one about generators. Generators are only good if they run, have fuel, are wired correctly, and don't kill everyone with CO poisoning! The main problem is that they usually sit for years without use.

I live in a condo and the lawyer who owns the unit below me is not a nice person so when i redid my kitchen i put 4 of these under the floor. They fit perfectly heightwise and my tank is located where the living room wood and kitchen laminate meet, so there's a 1/8 in gap which I covered with curved metal trim. Water goes right to the gap. Only negative is if I ever decide to move my tank, but so far I like where it is.

Lots of useful info here. You should write up a sticky for disaster preparedness. I for one didn't take it seriously last year. But this year I will be better prepared.

The line for one of my reactors popped a few months ago on my previous tank and I remember my wife came running into the bedroom and woke me up. Holy$&@#! I can't even tell you, it felt like my brain died for a few seconds, I had not idea what to do and then she yelled" DO SOMETHING!!!" and I just snapped out of it and jumped in there. Lol, I have nightmares about leaks from that moment on. I keep extra buckets, water,ect.. just in case, hope it doesn't happen again!

Nice write up! That scenario is definitely my worst nightmare.
I run a Vortech battery back and have an air stone that goes on automatically if there's a power failure. I keep this in the back of the display so you don't see the tube!
Next setup I would also like to get one of those check valves that you put on the return pump to prevent the back flow siphon.

I took down a koi tank last night and realized that some of my fish don't fit into salt buckets! Thinking of this thread, I decided to get some oversized Tupperware buckets as part of my emergency plan.

Back up plan if my tank leak, use my Jaccuzi as a backup tank. No powerhead needed, just turn it on.....lol. Break down the tank if that doesn't work.

For power outage:
Have a vortec backup battery that will run one pump and when i get back, turn on the generator. Never fire up the generator, hopefully that'll work when i needed.

Leaking tank:
2x 44 gallon rubbermaid to hold stocks.

Heat:
Central ac for now, thinking of a chiller.

I"m sure there's tons of scenario out there.
