in SA that entire coral will sell for max 35$
First, i want to say that I am not defending coral branding in order to seek high prices on corals. But i do see the positive side to it when its possible to differentiate vendors when its clear.
Most hobbyists and vendors put down people like Jason Fox by claiming they have or can get the same thing and that he is cheating people and it's the same thing. In some cases they do, and in some cases they don't. Just understand why some of the real high end "coral branders" do charge what they charge.
If you read up on some of them you would know that some of them have traveled around the world. That some have personally found these corals and brought them back to aqua culture. Realize that they were some of the ones who first introduced them to the hobby.
These days, This procedure isn't as common. Now, stuff is ripped out of the ocean, drop shipped, and sold in the masses by all these fly by day vendors just unloading it. Do you see them out searching and getting corals? bringing them back, aqua culturing ? and then introducing them to the hobby? i don't think so.
Maybe people like jason fox and others have/had the right idea and all these fly by day vendors ripping corals out the ocean should be the one we lift the eye brow at. Different times, do your research and open your eyes and make your own decision what makes you happy. If you like something buy it.
I think a lot of people are just fed up with half the vendors running around. I personally don't know any of these guys and really don't know the truth behind their back stories. I just float around and just keep a fish tank running for the trickle sound and the sand marks from the flow. The rest is researching more important things.

actually one of the first guys to brand corals { tyree } got most of his stock from other reefers, i had some of the same pieces as tyree from the person he had gotten them from.
i personally dont just blame the vendors/stores ect. if your stupid enough to pay those prices then it is your own fault
now i will say from what i understand with jason, he actually grows stuff out in his systems doesnt just get it frag it and sell it, he lets them en-crust.
funny part is people complaining about pricing and naming are the first one's to post up asking for a id so they can put a value or worth to a coral.
zoa's were always the one's that bothered me with the pricing. and few friends always drag me back to RC on the zoa forum to help stop the corruptness in the hobby.

Also don't forget, He does dive for most of his stuff. he has tons of things that has not even hit the market that are fraged up and kept in captivity for a long period of time before he releases them. He just went on a trip to figi i think i forget he came back with pieces that no one has ever seen.

So i think its ******ed and uncalled for to say people are dumb for spending that type of cash, when you and everyone here are selling corals at the market prices if not higher.

I think jason fox is one of the best sellers for a few reasons. One: He dives for his own coral a few times a year. Two: He waits over 6-7 months before he releases the frags to make sure they color up well and do well in captivity. Three: He does not hype his frags like some other vendors do. Four: His frags are some of the most healthy, colorful, pest free pieces around and they are almost never fresh cut. His prices on his site are not up to date at all. The time to buy from him is during Live Sales or discounts on holidays.

Here's my two cents:
What bars someone, anyone, from finding "rare" corals (or insert any marketable product here lol) keeping these corals in their tank, releasing them...eventually, and making a sizeable profit: absolutely nothing. To be forthright, I have nothing against the c word ends with ism.
When it comes to lineage, you associate a particular name with a certain reputation (when I hear JF or tyree I assume the coral is vibrant, unique and expensive, the latter of which is subjective).
In the end it's really up to the consumer to make an informed decision on their purchase. One buyer may justify an expensive frag, while another deem it absurd.Personally I would love to own a unique coral but I could not justify $300 1" frag. If I can afford that frag, my priorities spending the money would be elsewhere

Let's talk about designer clownfish and LEDs while we're at it.
If someone puts time and effort into cultivating a coral and they attach their name on it to identify it, then it's great. I think once it's not theirs anymore, it's now you're coral, so reselling a JF means nothing. Now if I were buying direct from Jason I'd consider it worth it. It's like going to the outlet store and buying the one offs.

I couldn't disagree more. First of all cross breeding and inter breeding are a totally different conversation to be had as are leds. However buying corals that have been in captivity for an extended period of time instead of promoting the depletion of our natural reefs is the most important thing imo.
By purchasing/trading corals from other reefers with or without a name on it is much better than buying chunks ripped out from the ocean a few days prior or worse and what some vendors/people do is cut them up and then sell them right away giving the animals no time to adjust.
By getting a frag from a reliable member with a cut from someone like tyree or jf ensures that the specific coral you are getting is from a colony that has been in captivity for a while and has proven to thrive unlike most $29.99 mini colonies in my experience.

Your not buying the name. If you like it buy it. Thats what ive learned after being in the hobby for 4 years. I used to think the name meant things, but it doesnt. However, the name helps you userstand what piece your buying. If it has JF on it, you know its going to be colorful . However, sadly, most of the coral i think are nice are over $50 per polyp or eye, etc. in the end, it is a business for the vendors and they have to make their money somewhere, but i do agree some prices are way too mch, but i dont see that with jason fox. (During live sales and when he offers 25% discounts, dnt go ny his website). When you think the coral is out of ur price range dont buy it.

so lets see some of those tyree\jf and other corals grown out. i know some people actually grow stuff out { more then a inch or two before fragging } they frag because of it growing into other corals or out of the water.
and theirs alot of people who realize they have the same peice's as some of the signature brands and just want to call it a jf or tyree for sale price or sale ability

Don't have a really big one but its getting there! its on a 2" disk going onto a 3.5" disk.

Bought it as that little nub a few months ago not even. sooner i think. Its a pretty fast grower once it gets settled. But in the long run it can die as fast as you blink as well. Very beautiful coral. so bright its not even funny.
