Lately looking at people selling some of they stuff. Maybe for upgrade or getting out. But some of prices seem ridiculous. Specially for tanks when you don't know how old it is. How many people got taken. Like tank leak, ect. Lets hear your nightmare stories. This is just a reminder for people are just getting into this hobby. You might save money in beginning but cost you more in long run. But I Do Not want to take away from honest people that sell equipment that you can trust. So who can you trust at good deal.

High reefer ratings and comments in their fs threads are very good hints. I tend to look for this and there is low amount of threads on here stating bad guys so you can generally trust a lot of people on here.

I don't think I've gotten a bad deal but I did however buy a LR and it infected my system with A LOT of bristle worms!

That is not all true. i mean well it is, There are some People on here with pretty good ratings and still shady to make a few extra dollars. Ive heard from word of mouth. Never encountered anyone like that thus far. Hope i never dont. ive met a ton of great people on here. made some friends as well. Ratings does play a big roll. But you always have to watch out if you dont no the person and your gonna buy a tank for the long haul and in the end result you get banged up cause there was one thing he forgot to tell you. :/ ive made a few noobie mistakes when we first started but nothing to drastic.

^I agree but like our hobby. There is always an exception to the rule. It's a good general use of thumb to do your homework by checking out reefer rating, previous posts, tank threads, and checking over your purchase properly.

LOL this is "manhattan" reefs so the possibility of a shady individual is likely. Just saying.

Like with all purchases, you have to do your research. Whether in this hobby, or somewhere else. Like when buying a used car, you get a carfax.

And whenever there are folks willing to buy, there will be folks willing to sell.
I'm interested in the water for a new setup. Is it live? And will it help me to cycle my tank faster?

Well, I know when I sell something it is from an honest place and I try to give as much information as I think is pertinent. To the point where my threads have paragraphs in them.

Now, if there is information that I didn't think was important when I bought or when I sell something, then i don't think I should be faulted.

For instance, the 120g tank, when I bought it came with 3 chips that the seller neglected to tell me about. They sold it to me with a background wrapped around it and I only saw it once I got it to my house and was peeling it off.

Sucks for me.

But I definitely took pictures of the chips and wrote about it on my FS thread. Even though it doesn't affect much of anything, I figure some folks may care.

But age of a tank?
I wouldn't think that was important so when I bought it I didn't even ask.

also, in terms of pricing, I go from what I paid for it, and then google other used sales prices and usually go below that price in the hopes that it will definitely sell
but you still have folks trying to undercut...geez

As far as items that one should be cautious with even if the person does not have negative feedback are:

Chillers (sometimes sold as working when not true)
expensive light fixtures (sold with bad reflectors, ballasts, fans, etc)
bulbs (gently used, sureeeeeee)
Dry Rock (never seen medications, maybe or maybe not)
Skimmers (perfect skimmer, super gunk puller, just upgrading cause i wanted to match my skimmer trim to my bedroom comforter set)

To make things easier on ourselves, look to pay 50% or less for something used and out of warranty, even less if you know that its something not necessary but you want to fiddle with it.

There are a few name brand items that have been proven to be effective for the purpose they are designed and those may warrant a bit more than 50% even if out of warranty.

Refrain from paying $700 for a used out of warranty $900 skimmer, just wait and pay the full $900 and get the warranty, the impellers alone on expensive skimmers will make you cringe when you find out how much they are to replace.

Last but not least, when in doubt pay with credit card or paypal, if you are taken, you can dispute it, freeze their account and if you are correct in your dispute you will get your money back, the end...

I am not honest at all so I never sell anything, I just give it away as I don't trust myself.
However I am selling one of these if anyone is interested.

How much for the tugboat?

dibs on the barges. i wanna put my tanks on the barges and float way out from shore and use seawater for water changes.

it's true, paul b. is a crook. he sent me a new majano wand when i told him the first gen. wand rusted on me. he should have taken his boat to the tappanzee bridge, swim ashore and walk another 20 miles to deliver in person....instead he took the lazy way and sent it via usps.
btw the bridge in the foreground is mine not paul's. i accept paypal.....lol.

i got jibbed buying a chiller advertised as 1/2 hp one which i later found out it was a 1/3 hp.(the 1/2 hp and 1/3 hp look identical but the 1/3 costs quite a bit less... the model # sticker was also conveniently missing/peeled off). i contacted the seller who then claimed he bought it as a 1/2 hp and that the sticker was already missing when he got it and that he no longer has the money and he'll call and give back the money when he has it. that was 2-3 years ago. he no longer uses that username.....probably made another username.
i'm not wishing him bad luck but KARMA IS A BEEITCH!!!! it will come back and bite you in the azz.

NEVER assume that carfax is correct! They have finally changed their ads to say that 'nobody knows everything'... Because they certainly don't !

+1 car fax is only accurate if the accident went thru insurance, if they paid to fix it then its a clean car according to car fax.

Lol never take someone's word for something that doesn't involve cash! Sold my aunts 50 gallon corner tank with stand and light for $80 looked brand new!! We wanted $100 but he said would you do $80 and some frags? We said ok, went through the hassle of dropping it off at his house, and even bringing it inside for him. He said he will send me a text since we have each others number or a pm on here when he got some frags growing...so far since that date to now which is about 2-3 months NOTHING!!! Pretty pissed of since we brought it in for him since he had a broken leg....felt like we were doing a good deed...but guess not.

a few bad experiences

I hate to say it but buying used sometimes and lets say most of the time when it comes too sensitive equipment needed to maintain a reef environment can be very tricky. Its an expensive hobby yes, but budgeting and making goals which are attainable are important; take your time buy what you need grow your tank slowly. Ive met a number of people that have been very helpful w/regard to offering (free) advice and that is invaluable. as far as buying both good n bad so Take advice from a beginner.... Ive learned the hard way.
