Love and Dedication.

You might be dedicated to something, but if the love isn't there, there's nothing to enjoy.

You might have the will to set up a tank, to keep it running, to make sure it survives and thrives...but you need the want as well.

Ok, more specific.

For the time-being, lets assign "reefing/corals" as a person of the female sex.

So what does it mean to Love the hobby?
Well, you saw her for the first time at the local fish store or on a National Geographic picture. And it's love at first sight. You want to learn everything about her. What makes her tick, what she needs, what makes her reproduce, what an investment this will be, what a sacrifice this will be... so you RESEARCH. You read everything there is about her. From the lighting requirements she needs, to the gentle flowing caress of the water she enjoys...you research it all. ANd then you SPEND! You buy her the best product, not the cheap ones. The best skimmer you can afford, the best wavemaker you can afford.... You make sure she gets what she deserves cause it's worth it in the long-run. You also have to RESPECT her. That means you can't rush anything. You can't just throw fish in or stock it before she cycles, even though you might want to very much... you must have self-control. Meanwhile, you learn the virtue of PATIENCE, because she will give you what you want, everything you've dream about, everything you thought she was capable of the first second you saw her in your LFS or your National Geographic photo...in time.

What does it mean to be Didicated to the hobby?
That means putting up with all her sh*t. Cleaning the glass, cleaning the sand. Cleaning her equipments. Every week. Feed her inhabitants everyday, multiple times a day. Dose her...monitor her when she's sick...buying every medicine to make her feel better...staring at her for hours or days...until she gets better. Thats dedication, my friend.

To me, that's what makes a person a good Reefkeeper.

By the way, I have a ReefKeeper I, wish I would have help out for the II, but they both have their problems. :( I probably would not buy it if I knew what I would have been dealing with.

Reefkeeping for most of us is a hobby. As in ANY hobby, spare time and disposable income play major parts in what a person can dedicate to that hobby. Just because a person can dedicate over 40 hrs a week and thousands of dollars a month does not make them a better reefkeeper in my eyes. Yes, they may have a great looking tank, but do they love it and its contents? Or is it just a conversation piece? Anyone who tries their best to provide an healthy environment for their marine life is a great reefkeeper to me. That person with a Domino damsel, 2 yellow polyps and 3 hermit crabs in a 10 gallon from Petland with the AquaClear power filter, who can't wait to get home to search for new spaghetti worms for hours on end, may love the hobby more. That's my definition of a great reefkeeper.

i don't think $$$$$$$ is a big issue here and i'll tell you why. there is a doctor here where i work who has an aquarium and doesn't even feed the fish herself. she pays someone to clean and even feed the fish for her. a true reefkeeper is one who wants to learn all there is about the hobby. of course time and patience play a key role but it all boils down to getting your hands wet; interacting w/ your reef.

knowledge, knowledge, knowledge that's what makes a good reefkeeper. you could spend all the money you want but if you don't even know the basics, your reef will reflect that.
