I lost couples heads of LPS lately, which includes frogspawn, torches and hammers. All other corals are fine. I have a mixed established 180g tank which is close to a year now. SPS is doing fine and growing, no deaths. However I couldn?t figure out why my LPS is dying heads after heads. What I noticed is that after the LPS head were receeding, I frag it off to save the rest from dying. I was suspectinginfection of some sort, but maybe not. Upon clipping off the dead head, I noticed that the skeleton of the LPS is super soft, you don?t need any strength to clip it off. Like slicing tofu with a knife. Anyone have similar experience and know what?s going on? And all my fishes are doing fine. cal, alk and mag is in check. Nitrate is 20 ppm or so.

How long had they been in that part of the tank? Any changes to the flow they were getting due to moving powerheads or rockwork? Any signs of brown jelly disease? BJD has taken some of my Euphillyia in the past and can spread quickly if not removed from the tank right away

interesting. I know someone who had soft skeleton euphyllia but there were no deaths at all. The only reason he knew there was something odd was when he fragged a piece for me.

Otherwise, there were no visual signs of stress and he has a good sized, heavy colony. He had to pick it up in order to frag but it wasn't until cutting into it when it sort of crushed that he noticed it. Neither of us are sure why this happened. I haven't checked the skeleton since it's been in my tank but I'll ask him to check on his, and I'll check mine when I get home.

Everything looks great though.

i had this same problem like 2 years ago when i bought a 5 head hammer frag off from some one. i think its some sort of infection. it only took out that hammer colony tho all hammer and torch where fine. make sure to suck out all the dying tissue.
