The electricity went out for 14 hours in my house (I live in Queens) I was in Manhattan at the time and had to burrow a pair of rollerblade just to get home, I was planning on hooking up a small pump to a converter to my car, since I don't have the battery powered pump. the converter fail on que, I freak out, tried to drive to my friends place in the dark streets, and got stuck before the brooklyn bridge. By the time I got home it was 8:00pm and when I check my tank, the cleaner shrimps, clown fish and my brittle star was lying infront of the rock work and my foxface was no where to be seem. So the only thing I can think of, was a small syphon starter I have, so I hook it up to an airline and an air stone. And for the next eight hours I sat there pumping air into my tank.
In the end I wasn't able to save the foxface and the anthia but every thing else survived, my arm's still sore from squeezing that damn rubber ball the whole night.....

All of my large fish died :( For some strange reason when I made it home from NYC the corals looked better than they did before I left Thursday. The Clams looked good and they opened up without gaping, I didnt change any water cause I figured the power had come back before I got home and all the ammonia in the sump had already been put in the tank, plus everything looked good (except all the bodies I had to fish out of the LR crevaces ) I think I made it out lucky, I'm putting in a generator to fail over to just in case this ever happens again.....

no power for 25 hours. No water either. Heat hit 95 degrees early into the blackout. I actually took steaks out of the freezer, bagged em and floated em in the tank to help bring the temp down (did it with all the frozen foods)

list of the lost:

2 perculas
2 flasher wrasses (carpenters)
2 queen purple anthias
15 or so acro frags
one rose bta
3 cleaner shrimp
6 peppermint shrimp
one 4 inch turq. ultra maxima
various snails and hermits
3 sand crabs

nothing worse than watching my fish leap out of the tank.

Good god, this is crazy -

Got to work today and my mated pair of clowns were dead, made me sad and after hearing about everyones losses, made me sadder - I used a huge soup paddle to get my tank at home circulating and did it in a circular manner - I found that even after I stopped circulating, the water moved for about 2-5 minutes depending on how much momentum I got. That seemed to work for me - haven't lost anything in the tank at home. The fish have ich, but with the stress of heavy breathing and me with my soup paddle, I guess I can't complain.

Wish everyone luck with their individual disasters, even if you didn't lose any fish/coral life, it is still unthinkable.

We didnt lose anything. After walking for 2 hours and finally catching a bus, we made it home to find that our siphon breaks worked. (The last power outage resulted in about 10 gallons of water on the floor)

I brought my tank temperature down by putting our frozen vegetables in ziplock bags and floating them in my tank. Fortunately we had just gone shopping a couple of days before.

Doing a search I ran across this thread. Figured I'd bring it back to the forefront just to remind everyone to be ready for the unexpected. The amount of life lost was incredible.
