rock color is bad ?

i have hade my rocks for 2yrs and they are still a shity gray color. and i have been useing purpleup and a & b cal what can i do to get nice color on my rocks:scratch:

After 2 years :lol2:, gotta be something more than flow. Or he's having the same problem jhale was having with coralline on the rocks before he re-did his tank.

What about gettin a piece from a fellow reefer thats already covered and then use the purple up to get it to spread ?

stop using the purple up it is a bottle of empty promises with a purple wrapper. I have sen more people destroy tanks with it from improper dosing or not even improper dosing. Stop using the 2 part and the purple up you may be causing all the right elements to precipitate out of the water column. Just try doing a few water changes and don't dose. What kind of salt are you using? r.o.? what are your levels currently at?

Stop with the purple up. Assuming that you have some corraline in your tank to begin with, keep your alk and calcium levels in line, and you will soon be posting a thread on the best way to scrape corraline off your glass.

OK lets clear something up, Purple up is not crap, it is a good combo iodine calcium supplement for a fish tank, it however does not give you insane growth of coraline algae as it promises, a well balanced tank will do that.

I have the same thing going on in my tank. After one year my rocks look like ****. I have put some pieces full of coraline, they have stayed purple but nothing has spread. I do have some penny sized splotches on the rock but that's it. Most of the rock looks dirty, even though I hit them with a turkey baster twice a week.

It's funny, because I was just about to start the same thread tonight. I'm at the point that I'm seriously thinking about cooking the rock. I'd post pics but too embarassed to.:help:

My rocks look like crap too. I have red turf algae and many parts of the rock are also grey with specs of coraline. I want Kedd rocks!!!

i wouldnt say purple up is bad....but just dont overdose it ...
i have heard that purple up will mess with your ph and alk. but i havent tested to confirm......i do small doses in my 10g and i do see more coraline........but i think the kent nano-reef 2 part does enough justice for a small 10g.....
i would definetly agree with the others that maintaining goood water quality has the best results.

OK lets clear something up, Purple up is not crap.

+1...I started my present tanks 5 years ago (Thanksgiving)... with DRY caribbean base rock, seeded with some coraline covered rubble, and 'purple up',(which I continued using monthly for years)...anyone that has seen my tanks (links below) will tell you I have coraline EVERYWHERE, and NO ONE can tell the base rock from 'premium' live rock!

you have to introduce coralin to the tank get a peice with it on it keep your calcium alk and mag in order it will grow

I agree w Steve. Get a peice of rock w coralline. It should spread. Keep the right iodine level, phosphate as low as possible. Purple up rock!!!!!!

get take a pice of rock with coraline on it turn off all the filters and scrape some off the rock. let the tank sit for about 10 minuts till everything setles of the rock and then trun everything back on. also make sure you are dosing the right ammount of chemicals. You should see a improvment in a couple of weeks. Purple up is to aid in the help of existing coraline algie to grow.

in studies I do think that coral ine algie grows under atinics. I do not know how true this is but in my tank I do see a growth in the area where the atinics are considering the last bulb in my 6 light fixture is a atinic and it shines towards the back of the tank and on the glass I have a massive amount of coral line growth

guys this thread is a yr plus ol dand jason doesnt even have a tank anymore
