Manifolds look nice and orderly but...
Gate valves, instead of ball valves, are much more precise and easy to operate. Opening a valve reduces resistance, closing it will increase it. That's the easy part. Determining how much the other lines are effected by opening or closing a valve not as predictable. Then add to that the different heights of the display, equipment, whatever, and what elbows the water has to pass through, on top of or inside any given equipment and the path of resistance becomes even more blurred
A Separate return pump gives you a pretty determined and very steady flow, regardless of any other things going on.
