I was never a fan of filter socks and pads in the 10/100 micron range on my reef tanks for long periods. Some of my corals seem to grow faster without them. However i'm not suggesting you stop using filter socks. A cheap alternative that will not polish the reef, are paint strainer bags. I use four/five one gal paint strainer bags. I use a thick rubber band to hold them on to the hose like a sock and a small piece of air line tube to act as a vent a few inches above the water line and bio pellets can be added in as well.

good product, i use for years, work well on Zeolite Rocks, Active carbon, some GFO, etc.
