One of my Mexican Turbos (large) has now sucked up 2 (two) 1.5" - 2" beautiful clams over a 2 month period. I pulled him off the latest victim last night, but alas, I was too late. I have a couple other Mexican Turbos, but i am reasonably certain it was the same Turbo who seems to like squamosa. I also have several other larger clams (maxima, crocea, squamosa) and I fear for their lives. As I know he did the deed, I am inclined to capital punishment as his due. Is there anyone out there who wants to take up his appeal and defend him? Speak now or forever kiss his shell goodbye.

Very Interesting!

throw him in your refugium if you don't want to kill it. It still has its uses for you.

Very interesting appeal, Chris. However, I am so angry at him, I am thinking the old "eye for eye, turbo for clam" scenerio. BTW, how is your son doing? I am presuming well, since I have not had recent questions from you. Look forward to meeting him soon.

Are you sure he just wasn't cleaning up after a deceased clam??? 1.5 is pretty small and if you weren't feeding it directly, it may have just died. :(

I agree with Chris, into the sump.

Absolutely certain he/she was quite well at dinner time and Mex Turbo wanted desert, that bastard. Life in a refugium without the possibility of aquarium tank again just might be too good for him/her!!!

Tell It To THe Judge

Turbo snails, Mexican or otherwise are herbivores and will not eat clams. Either you have some other species of snail or something else is going on.

This arguement was used at Mex Turbo's trial. But as he was caught in the act TWICE, it was decided that he/she has a psychopathic defect somewhere in its notocord (or taste buds) and it will keep defying all books that argue otherwise.

David, you're cracking me up, man. It's just a snail... you'll feel no better after smashing it.
The boy is doing fine. He got very sick a couple of weeks ago, so there were sleepless nights for about a week and a half. He's better now though. I've been leaving my "ped" alone as well. We've fallen into our niche here as parents and it's gotten much better. You should have seen how awkward I felt giving Fritz (Fred) advice with getting his son on a schedule.
back to topic... the snail will hopefully make your viewing of the refugium better.

Anything Is Possible

There certainly are species of snails that bore into clams and digest and suck out the meat, but they are not mexican turbos. Someone sold you the wrong species.

Anything is possible. However, I personally feel comfortable in recognizing a shifty eyed Mex. Turbo when I see one, the bastard.

Hello!

Bergard,
Maybe you're just catching it at a time where it makes it look like the snail did the dirty work, when it really didn't.

Got a picture of this "turbo snail"?
-Kris

Are you suggesting that someone framed the shifty eyed Mex. Turbo - TWICE?? If my pea-sized brain can figure out how to post pic, may try later.

I agree with Randy and Kris.
Turbo snails do not eat healthy clams.
Your clams probably died and they were cleaning up the mess.
If you have a pic of the snail that would help.
For now give the snail a reprieve and leave him in the sump.

Even if it did eat the clams it's not the snails fault.
Just find it a new home.
I have a welk in my fuge now that went for the same clam 3 times in a row. I kept pulling the welk off the bottom of the clam and the darn thing would crawl back and tip the clam over again. I did not get mad at the snail I just threw him in the fuge :)

Prejudice

Me personally I'm not afraid to show my prejudice. Burn the bastard or at least banish him to the land of sumpdom. He had no place being on that clam regardless of dead or alive. I mean come on show some respect for the dead or dieing, heh? Filthy snails are nothing more then biological bombs just waiting to go off in the furthest reaches of your tank anyways.

Urchins baby - now that's the way to go!

Well, currently I am feeling a soft spot in my heart, a feeling somewhat foreign to me!! But the votes (arguements) for fuge/sump are Clarence Darrow strong. So to the fuge (no sump, all hang on) it is. BTW, the clam was not dead for all you skeptics. It was alive an opening/closing w/o any retraction just prior to the shifty eyed Mex. Turbo sucking its stuff out from the top opening, not the bottom, that bastard.
PS. I also like Joe's idea!!!

i'd personally prefer death over life in prison with no chance of parol. Just as our legal system intended, the inmate's mental capacity will slowly deteriorate to that of a snail.

Doc I wouldn't put it in the HOB fuge if you have not covered the discharge pipe from the inside and the outside discharges. The snail will get in there and plug it up and cause the fuge to overflow. TRUST ME!

most animals are opportunistic feeders. If there is free food avilable with little effort than it's what's for dinner. However, I doubt your snail was eating the clam, he was just cleaning up (as everyone else already said) the remains. Although the snail is a minority and so must be guilty of eating the clam and may be linked to other heinous crimes against bivalves, lets try not to profile here.
