For those of you who do have some undissolved baking soda, do you shake the bottle before you dose, or do you just pour off the clean water.

And what does baking it for longer and at a higher temperature do?

It drives off more CO2 to give you more Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate) from baking soda (NaHCO3 which is sodium bicarbonate)

2 NaHCO3 + heat ---> Na2CO3 +H2O+CO2

Sodium carbonate dissolves easier than sodium bicarbonate and that's why recipe#1 can be more concentrated. Baking it longer with higher temp will convert more baking soda to sodium carbonate. Make sense?

I always make 5 gallon at a time. And I just add the baking soda all at once straight from the oven. A power head mixes it up with a heater in the bucket. In a couple hours, they all dissolve. BTW, I use 2 large boxes of arm and hammer which is 1.8kg each to make 5 gallon, so it is 2 3/4 cups per gallon instead of 2 1/4.

Alright Regal... That's what I was looking for... someone to drop some science on me.
I'm not trying to start a flame war and I'm not saying I disagree with Regal, but are there any opinions to the last few posts?

ok chris the batch i made just fully dissolved in the bucket.. what i did was placed the baking soda on a baking sheet let it do its thing in the oven at 400 degrees for 1 hour and 1/2.. i also stirred the baking soda on the tray about 45 min. into the baking...

I had the rodi water already heated up to 90 degrees from a heater... i took a cup at a time and sprinkled it in and kept stirring while sprinkling it in.. also had a small powerhead moving the water... had the bucket 3/4 full after adding all the baking soda, I topped off with the 1/4 of water I had taken out of the bucket and its all good.... nuthing left over and water is clear...

My OCD acted up and I threw away my last batch.

Well, well, well. I did the same thing and it worked just fine. Thanks Matt, Tony, Regal.
