How far do you kepp your MH's from the tank? 6-8-10-or 12 in

i have a 10gal reef tank with a 175w 10k hamilton box pendant over it. the bulb is roughly 3" from the surface, and i am thinking it is too intense. i had to add a sump to increase the water so that the temp of the water didnt boil by the end of the day. i am now considering adding a piece of filtered glass to the pendant, as well as 2 13w arctinics to help coraline growth. i think it is too much light for the soft corals, as they are not prospering, but my hammer and frogspawn are thriving.

My tank is acrylic, so I don't want to crack it. Do you guys think 6 inches from the acrylic top and 7 1/2 from the water is good enough? I will 2 fans blowing directly onto the bulbs to reduce heat.

I wanted to bring this back real quick. I'm sure some of you have it higher than 12 in. I'm really interested in the folks that have a canopy and have it high too (tall canopy).

Let's hear it, what distance do you guys have your MH away from the water?

Mine are 2x250 and are 5.5" above my 75 gal tank.

Hood has a splash guard on it to protect lights
