I ordered a 1 in. sea swirl that should be arriving friday and I was trying to figure out were I will put it on my 4 ft 75g tank I had two ideas.
1. place it on the side of the tank pushing the water lenght wise.
2. place it in the middle on the back and have it push the water towards the front.
I am leaning towards option 2 it seems like it would cause some good current. Any advice from sea swirl users.

The thing to remember is that the sea swirl oscillates 90 degrees. I like your option two better than option 1, although if you mounted it in one back corner it might give you good movement also. Particularly if you would like one end of your tank to be more turbulent than the other. You can set them so that they move plus or minus 45 degrees from forward dead center (for center use), or zero - 90 degrees from forward dead center (for corner use), if I am making any sense. I'm not sure how to explain it.

If you mount it in the middle of the tank you will need the "Y" adapter that will give you 180 degree flow. It will also allow you to direct the flow further down into the tank. It works good for me, I also have 2 maxijet 1200's on a wave strip.

Im having the same problem with my 120. I have two overflows with two returns and have no clue where to put the seaswirl. There is a glass brace in the center of the tank preventing me from placing it dead center. And the overflows also make it difficult. Limme know if you come up with any solutions!

Ed and Cindy at Sea Swirl are extremely helpful and will custom-make mounting brackets for you in just about any configuration you want. They made two brackets for me so I could mount two 3/4" Sea Swirls along the left and right sides of my 75. The Sea Swirls will point directly at each other from opposite sides of the tank.

If you put the seaswirl in the center back of your tank, with no y on it, you are in for trouble. The water flow directly in front of the seaswirl will "blow" down your front glass and blow away all your sand in the front.

Something to think about.
