sorry no pic.
pros: looks good, or rather, you don't see it very much. Much much better looking then the P/H.
You can buy a lot of different nozzels (sp?) to get the coverage you want. Friend says you don't have to clean often and I can see why. Have only had mine 2 months. never cleaned.

cons: IMO my tank could use more current in the front bottom and back bottom. My friend uses a spray bar in back. they are expensive. I started with one 3/4" in a 125. ( Also 2 P/H mounted on the overflows) HTH amber

Likes
Very natural current
No power heads in tank
Well built

Dislikes
1" model is a little loud
Output nozzles have a tendancy to work themselves loose.

I don't have a picture of them in operation--I'm not quite set up yet--but here's a picture of a pair of 3/4's.

I've got the 3/4" that I got at LFS for 130.00 because they wanted to dump it. I got lucky and they ordered it for someone and that person changed their mind. Very happy with it. I'm definately getting another one and dumping my locline spray bar on the other side. Not to mention the powerheads in the tank.

If you happen to be asking me, MandarinFish, the answer is yes and I have a 120 gallon tank.

Actually I did plan to use only the 2 Seaswirls on mine also. 180 gal. But now I think I've figured out how to do a closed loop and I think I'm going to incoporate that spray bar in it

I recently dropped $169 USD on a 1" model for my 90 reef... Best 170 clams I ever spent on the thing. The flow it gives you is great, sweeping side to side like it does leaves very few dead spots if you're careful and plan it right. Now I'm only using a pair of opposing Hagen 802 powerheads in there to supplement. If I had to money, I'd buy a whoop-ass pump to power a second one, and get another 1". They're not cheap, no doubt about it, but are a great addition to your tank, IMO. A friend of mine had one die on him, and the manufacturer claimed it was out of warranty or something... so he took it apart. Nothing more than a tiny AC motor and a Cam to rotate the output. If you're really handy, you could probably make one.

What size/type of pump would you use for a pair of 1" SeaSwirls on a closed loop?

I am in the planning stages of a 78"x32"x36"high tank. All of the water returning from the sump (2000 gph) will be directed through 6-8 outlets spaced along the back of the tank behind the rockwork (i.e., mulitple spraybars).

All of the water movement for the upper portion of the tank will be provided by the pair of SeaSwirls.

I just ordered the 3/4 inch from Marine Depot for 159$ w/ free shipping. I saw one in action and was very impressed. It gave real wave action and IMO no wave maker is as good as a sea swirl. I use a red sea right now and am not happy. Seaswirls constantly change the current hitting your coral so they help keep a more natural setting.

O.K. if I have a sump under the 72 with a pump to return the water to the tank, I assume you need a pump to run the sea swirl so you just plumb the return pump into the sea swirl correct ?

The sea swirl acts as a rotating return from your sump correct ?

What size pump to run a 3/4 inch sea swirl ? does the size of the return to the sump matter if its a built in overflow ?

someone post a diagram please

Mike, I have no idea what that pump is rated at but the 1" SS can handle around 1200 gallons/hr. Having said that I use four 1/2" SS on my 180, 6' x 2' x 2', and have around 2300 GPH running through them.

Thanks Steve. The pump I mentioned has about the same flow as your set-up. Do you feel that dividing up the return between 4 SeaSwirls gives you better randon movement as opposed to only 2 Sea Swirls (each of which would have a much higher flow rate)? I ask this because the plan dimensions of my tank will be 78"x32", and I am concerned that dividing up the return between 4 SeaSwirls will render each of them too weak (flow wise) to do much good. What do you think?

Mike,
I'd opt for 2 x 1" sea swirls vs. 4 x 1/2" sea swirls. Twice as many mechanical units is twice as likely to break. Besides, 4 x 1/2" outputs has more head pressure then 2 x 1" outputs. I'm partial to large diameter outputs; the idea is to displace as much water as possible with minimum water velocity (particularly vectored directly at livestock).

2 x 1" sea swirls will handle a MD100RLT just fine.

BTW, Sea Swirls are infinitely better then their POS Aquagate predecessors. For those who've been around long enough to use Aquagates, we appreciate Sea Swirls that much more!

Thanks Len. I was leaning towards 2x 1" SeaSwirls. I figured that anything less would not have enough flow for the size of my tank. But Steve did get me thinking . . .
