I accidentally turned my diatom filter that had been setting with stagnant water for the past 2 months (I thought the plug was to a powerhead). I didn’t realize my mistake until 10 minutes later when my tank smelled like rotten eggs. I only have some live rock, ricordea mushrooms, 4â€

Fmx2md, I don't know how to answer the first part of your question other than water changes, and I would do 50 to 75%.
As to your second question, how many wraps did you make on the male threads and are you talking about pvc?

What size is your tank? I would get some carbon going, to be safe. Tape dope? I've heard of teflon tape and pipe dope, but if you ARE using PVC, you should be using the right solvent to seal the joints.
Like Steve says, water changes are always a good idea.

120g with 60g sump, so I'd rather not do a water change. I can do carbon though!!! Sorry my post was late, yes its teflon tape not tape dope. For the slip fittings I used purple priper then PVC cement. And for the male/female threaded fittings I used teflon tape and two wraps. I guess I should wrap some more, and try to tighten with a wrench!!

All good ideas. Are you sure about the teflon tape melting?? If so thats pretty neat. I might just put some carbon in my DE filter (I cleaned the dumb thing out this morning, and boy did it stink) and run it for a day or two. The smell has definately gone down, I guess some of it bubbled out!

SPC when I did pool plumbing 2 wraps were more the sufficient. This time I tighetened with my hands and although I dont have Popeye forarms I was able to tighten them pretty good barehanded. I'll try to tighted some more and see how it turns out.

i'm new to reeftanks, but i've definitely done my fair share of plumbing (unfortunately I guess!). the important thing with teflon tape is to tighten, with a wrench, all at once. the idea is that the friction caused by the threads turning around the tape will melt the tape and create a seal. if you tighten a little, then wait, then tighten some more you never melt that tape and you'll never get a good seal. try it, and don't be afraid to use a couple of turns of tape!

The only idea I can think to add is to clean the diatom filter and and run it with fresh DE. Good luck.
