I have a 4 month old 46 bowfront with only a royal gramma. He looks kind of lonely so I'm going to buy him a(some) tank mate(s) today. I will definitely be getting a True Percula but I'm considering a pair.

LFS is getting a shipment today. My LFS says they do not receive mated pairs, but they are young enough to become mated if I buy two. With my relatively small tank i would like to have as many different fish as possible, knowing that i cannot have a large bioload. This is the why i am reluctant to buy the pair.

I would be interested on behavioral differences between a mated pair and a single percula. Are the mated pair that much happier and/or interesting to watch than a single percula which will allow me to add another different type fish???

I personally am very fond of clownfish pairs; the interaction between them is priceless. I would caution you to make sure that whatever you buy, single or pair, find out if they are captive raised or wild caught.

Buy captive bred only as a farm bred fish will not develop some of the bacterial infections that can be present in wild fish. Not to mention that they are friendlier and acclimate easier.

I would buy a pair personally but for sure check whether they are captive bred or not.

My 2 cents,

I would get a pair of clown fish instead of one. About the Royal gramma, I also recommended two or three in your 46 g tank. Make sure you anly have one larger size and tow smaller ones. You will end up with a breeding trio of RG. Five small fishes in a 46 g tank is perfect.

I picked up a pair of True Percula today. They are a nice looking pair about 1 1/2" long and look almost identical in markings.

I probably go with this trio for a few months, I'm upgrading my lighting in December and plan to take on a few easy corals! That should tie up the funds for a while! LMAO

I ve found that most clowns with the exception of maroons do best in pairs I have a set of false percs in my tank and a royal gramma

WhiteQueen is right the tank raised fish are always the best most hardy disease resistant clowns you can buy

Congrats on the new arrival
