All I can say is WOW. I can not believe how nice the Reef at the Riverhead Aqurium is. Does anyone know of any articles on this place.
I stood there for 1/2 hour staring into the tank. Then I moved 10 feet to the right and spent another 1/2 hour. Joe , once again Thank you.

This is a Crown Jewel, it makes LI proud. wish I could have stayed around for the behind the scenes tour.

Yes a very nice exhibit indeed...when they say clown fish display...that's what the mean. And the size of those lion fish.....nice.

When I was stood infront of the large reef-tank, I thought my 200 was nano cube.....

Compared to that tank - all of our tanks put together would be a nano-cube :)

I took some decent pictures of the tank and will post them later today here if that kewl with MrFirst - I want to see if we can find Heuerfan's thread from a year ago and do comparison shots. OMG the thing has overgrown itself - and the pair of Lt. Tangs - precious!

Hey Jim, i wasn't there otherwise of course i would have said hello. My pics are from previous visits.

Leave it here. It's mostly a discussion thread with pics for reference.

Kathy, thanks for the link. It's cool to see how it was built and see what it looks like now. Awesome!

Joe was one of our featured speakers at last year's Spring swap and his presentation detailed the creation of this fantastic aquarium.

i enjoyed that presentation tremendously. it was great to hear him talk about all the minor details and some of the things that go wrong when taking care of such a large reef.

i'd love to see some pics and maybe take a trip up there this summer

Kathy, thanks for the link. It's cool to see how it was built and see what it looks like now. Awesome!

Joe's full presentation of how the tank was built had even more pics than the article, but nothing will beat seeing it in person. Certainly a bit more involved than our glass boxes that we stress over so much! He told us that the original plan for it was drawn on a napkin...he still has it...

Reefman...I'm sure there are hotels in the general area. There is a current plan to build a hotel right nearby Atlantis. Last I heard it is supposed to open this fall. Not sure if that is still the expected date.

Where are the pics???!!!

House great pix.

One of the interesting things about this reef and almost all the tanks there, they are surge systems. They culture their own plankton and brine there as well. They breed seahorses and peppermint shrimp. They truck in 25,000 gallons of seawater that they filter and use for water changes.

This is truly one of the greatest captive reefs in the world. Everyone here should find the time to visit Atlantis and support a world class public aquarium right here in our back yard.

wow

That reef tank is what got me started, plus Joe's presentation at my FW club of how it was all built.
If you get the chance definitley do the behind the scenes tour, it's quite interesting. The skimmer alone...OMG! lol

Here's an article from 'Advanced Aquarist' on how it was built...I'm beginning to feel like Deanos...

WOW>>>>>....This is amazing. :chef:

I think this just gave me an Idea.
