Firstly, I would like to apologise if I gave the wrong impression with my post on Friday, I obviously did as I am disturbed at the lack of any real control over the standard of dialogue on the message board. My point was that Mr A saying that this is the rule maybe for him but not for Mr B. Mr A may have x sized tank and do monthly water changes, Mr B may have the same sized tank and do daily water changes. The insults that flew between BUCKTRONIX and other members served no real constructive point to the discussion, so why post, nazi's, dope, all these subjects have nothing to do with our beloved hobby. What I posted worked for me, my fish DO NOT fight, at 370 gallons (UK, not US!) they have the room, am fed 3 times per day (except tangs which have algae once per day and graze on the 250lb of live rock for the remainder of the day. Water changes are carried out every three days (20%), (ref to post about being on a bus with smelly football players!,NAESCO how often is your water changed?). I have studied marine biology and an a divemaster, diving worldwide throughout the year in many natural habitats. I have encountered single minded 'know it alls' on the discus breeders web site and over the years have seen some of the myths re-evaluated.

Hi Tony, im OWSI 603912, and a fish keeper for the last ten years, and i still say Bucktronix has too many tangs. The number of water changes you do is irrelevant, many of us here have surpassed water changes through correct use of NNR methods. I truly beleave that our NNR systems have a far more stable and enriched water quality than any system that has to "mop up" EXCESSIVE nitrates throught the use of constant water changes. The fact that you have so much LR only detracts from the total swimming space provided for your fish. The reason why we on this board feel that tangs should only be kept in systems over 150 gallons is due to the swimming nature of these fish, they are constantly on the move, and move very fast. We just want to see the best for the fish and not what suits your requirements as their keeper.

I agree with you mouse, I wasn't really referring to the digs at BUCKTRONIX, just the tone of the stream of responses. My tangs in 370 gallons and 8" have plenty of room to swim, are used to each other and are well cared for. As they grow out they will be transferred to one of my other tanks, apart from one of the Regals and the Lipstick (very docile fish), the others are less than 3 inches. NNR?

First if you don't mind Tony, would you mind explaining this statement a little further? What do you mean by control?

Steve, what I meant was that on one of the message boards I used to belong to, those who posted profanity,or generally insulting and non constructive info on the message board on a regular basis were warned by the host and removed if it continued. My point was in reference to drugs, nazi's etc on my post from Friday, mainly not relevant or constructive and to some I'm sure quite offensive.

This board isn't ruled with an iron fist. That's what makes it more fun. People get offended. That's life. But there is a limit, and Chucker and James do a great job of keeping a rein on things.

That's just about it. We don't think it's our job to make sure that people don't get offended...
icon_redface.gif
) If we tried to do that we would have to moderate every single post (!!!) to make sure that everyone got a "warm fuzzy feeling" when they visited...
icon_smile.gif

Instead, we take a more laissez faire approach, believing that you folks are all responsible individuals - heck, you keep reeftanks - and can decide for yourselves what is OK to post and what isn't.

If people want to disagree and get a good discussion going, then great, please do! That's how the hobby grows. If you get upset when someone disagrees with you, and you start calling them names...people probably aren't going to be too happy with you.

Cheers
James Wiseman

Uh-oh Mouse, I agree that deep sand beds and NNR systems can handle nitrates just fine, but "surpassed water changes?" Sorry, there are too many things that we don't test for, and can't test for, that build up or are depleted in our systems for anyone to think that no water change systems "have a far more stable and enriched water quality."

Just my thoughts,

Kevin

PS - Oooh, if were doing "laissez faire," can I mention Kirtis?

I view tang keeping very seriously but when someone calls you a nazi and attacks your homeland, I will fight back, in this case with humour. Obviously the moderators, and I think most people got that.

Tony,

If you can't swim with the big fish, get out of the water!

If you like that Cry Baby type BB, then go to ReefCentral, I am sure you will fit right in!

I'd like to throw a newbie opinion into the mix. I really like this board, The members that had ansewred my earlier questions were great and I really apreciated it unlike a lot of the other boards. But I'm trying to learn as much as possible and opinion based arguments don't help that. Just remeber that when we get to talking about so and so's town is bad because there's a ton of dope smoking, That does absolutley ZERO for our hobby. Just my thoughts.

Do we have some anger management issues that need to be addressed?

This post cracks me up. I have read some of the other boards and thats just what I get...Bored! This board has some very knowledgeable people that can get you through about any crisis. You just have to be ready for a little spice along the way. How many times can you answer posts on getting rid of cyno or should I get a mandrin? The people here do a good job of answering questions AND keeping it interesting. When people step out of line or get too nasty someone usually says something (huh ernie?). Even us accused tree huggers.

I personally think that stoners often have the best tanks as they sit around and watch it all day long, and, to boot, the best reef lighting is also conducive to massive plant growth (if you catch my drift). Not that I do this, but I've seen some pretty amazing tanks, and I often wonder about the people setting them up.....

Ok, maybee i went a little to far with the "surpassed Water changes" but i was trying to make the point that Daily Water changes are defenately no way to handle Nitrate reduction.

Oh Tony, NNR = Natural Nitrate Reduction

But what most people run here is actually a Hybryd. Many of the systems incorporate heavy skimming over the top of this, and also in the case of a refugeium there may be Macro Algal Nutrient Export.

So all in all many of our systems have three methods of constant nutrient export or total denitrification, in the following forms.

Skimmer - nutrient export

Deep Sand Bed - Complete denitrification to nitrogen gas in oxygen free layer

Macro Algies - Toxin Synthasys and export.

Now if you have an underated skimmer, and a crushed coral substrate, with no refugeum. Then i would say you would have to do daily water changes. Infact a system like that you might as well chain yourself to it. BTW, if your skimmer is rated to the tank size you have then its underated, and if its a bad manufacturer then it probably doesn't even work at all. I.E. D&D's Beast and the Titan for starters.

So Tony what you running?

Water change is good for the tank but bad for my wallet. I can't image change water 20% every three days like Tony. That five 200 g IO buckets per month for me. I have enough water change with 50 g (10%) per month.

Im not sure water changes are that good that i would want to do them every week, or every three days
