P.S., there IS one condition, though.... you've got to tell me what the damn big blue wobbly thing is, though

Looks good to me. My sump is a more condensed version of this. Skimmer, refuge, return, all in a 20 gal long. I like the angled baffle for cooling.

The Miracle Mud is quite expensive, too expensive for me to consider a 3" bed of the stuff.

So i mix it 50 / 50 with sand and i should still get all of the benefits from the Mud, i,e, Minerals and nutrients allong with the Ahem.. "miracle" part, (HLLD regeneration. And this should also help to stabalise the Macro's in the Refugeium.

And the sand helps me to bolster the load up to a 3" bed creating an oxygen free total denitrification zone.

well thats the plan anyhow.

Does anyone disagree with that, or had any preveous knowlege of that substarte mix?

Looks good Mouse. IMO I don't see a need for the Miracle Mud. I have a refugium with a 4" DSB of sand only and have tremendous growth of a wide variety of plants and caulerpa.
One other question, why are you going with 3 seperate containers rather than one large one?

Two thoughts on the design. First, if you're going to install your skimmer in-sump, then you'll need some way to regulate the water level in the sump. If you're using an auto top-off system with it, then it should work fine. If not, you'll have headaches regulating the skimmer because of fluctuating sump water level.

Second, you might consider not having all the water flow through the refugium. What I mean is, depending on the capacity of your return pump, you might end up with a hurricane in the refugium. This will tend to work against your goal of growing a good population of microfauna in there.

I remember going through this about a year ago. Designing and building stuff like this is half the fun of it all. When you finally see it working (and it works like you planned), that's the icing on the cake!

Anyway, that's just my $0.02.

well.. i have a mud filter sump/refigium, actually its all i have for filtration. i don't think mixing the mud and sand is going to work for a few reasons.

1) you aren’t really going to benefit much from the mud if its mixed with that sand. the water needs to constantly wash over it to release the micro nutrients.

2) the mud breaks down and you need to replace 50% of it every year. im not sure how you will do this if its mixed with the sand. im not sure but you may just end up with mush instead of a sand/mud bed. just a guess

i would say you should consider either/or. if you do do mud only you dont need a lot. my 90 gallon only has 20lbs of mud in the sump. less than 2 inches thick. and the mud leaches enough iodine that you don't have to supplement that anymore either.

SPC, the reason why i wanted the three seperate tanks is because id like to have the two outside ones inside cabinets and the middle one on view. This would also mean that the other two tanks were in complete darkness and hopefully require less cleaning.

Bucktronix, if i go with just the mud in the refugeum then that means that my DSB will have to be in the main tank. Which i suppose is no real biggie, id just rather of had it in the refugeum. But then again i could allways have two chambers in the refugeum.

Whats the particle size of the mud? would a Gravel tidy keep it seperate from sand? This would enable me to have the denitrifying bit from the DSB and the mineral bit from the mud.

JDeets, the baffles mean that theres no reduction in water level. And ill also have a fresh water top off.
