I had decided on the euro-reef skimmer. They have one advertised for 200+ gallons. When I talked to them they said that for a 230 gallon tank I would need a CS12 with is too tall for my cabinet. I have only 30max under there. I hate when they advertise that something is capable of doing something and then when you go to order...its not true. I really like the reef creations one, but to clean it you have to disemble 8 screws to take it apart. I wouldn't want to do that to empty it each time. can you tell me about others that are really good too? thanks guys

I am going through the same thing, 225 gallon with a 24 inch tall stand, and I am seriously considering the Reef Concepts Aerofoamer. From everything I have read, these are one of the best on the market. I know my local reef store use them exclusively and I am really impressed with their performace. From what I understand about them as well is that their skimmers aren't overrated as far as system capacity. They are one of the most expensive expensive on the market though. You can read about them at Reef Concpets

I had a similar space problem so I went with an Aqua C . I have been pretty pleased with the performance.

Lynn,
who did you talk to? If you look at Euro-reefs site they recommend a CS8-3 for your tank. IMO, that will be more then enough.

I'd go a CS12-1 24" high (good to 400g). They are not advertising anything that doesn't work. Do you have their website ? There appears to be some confusion here. Is it the footprint ?

They will also custom build.

I emailed them and Jeff replied. He said that a CS12 he said is 30", he said the CS8 3 is minimum and the CS8-2 will work but is not ideal.

Lynn, an AquaC is not for that size tank, in our best advice. Should we give up on this ?

An AquaC EV-240 should have no problems handling that sized aquarium. In fact it should do it with relative ease. So would a Precision Marine Bullet 2. An Aerofoamer 824 would also suffice.

Lynn, I had the same problem with ER skimmers. Our setups must be similar. I have a 220g system (170g tank,50g sump) and I emailed them about several things. I was told the same thing, The cs6-3 was not large enough for my system, even though at the time they had a rating of 300g. I was so close to ordering one. Glad I didnt.

I went with a Myreef skimmer and its great! http://myreefcreations.com/
Contact Andy, he is great to work with. They are also cheaper up front to buy than the euroreefs, but they do require a large pump to run (beckett). Also, if you can hold off a bit Andy has some really nice improvments coming down the pipeline

Yeah, you have to remember that the MyReef skimmer also needs a pump, a big pump. That will bring the cost up just a little bit

Lynn,
I don't understand why Jeff keeps telling people they need a bigger skimmer then what he advertises on his site. I use a CS6-3 on my 150 plus 40 gal sump and its more then enough for my tank. The CS8-3 will be fine if a Euro-reef is what you want. You don't need any clearance what so ever with a ER skimmer. The cup slides right off, it doesn't have to be lifted. If you only have room for a 29" skimmer then ask Jeff to cut it down. I can remove the cup from my skimmer in 5 seconds, I can remove the pump in 5 seconds. You will not find a better skimmer nor will you find a skimmer easier to use and maintain.

I know Jeff want his customers to be happy. I think he wants them to be TOO happy

This was including the pump addition. It is still quite a bit more.

Without the pump it is closer to $230-$250 cheaper, but of course we know they can't run without pumps. Myreef=good quality at a great price!

Without a doubt Andy makes a fine skimmer. Lots of people use them and I have never read a bad thing about Andy or his skimmers. My reason for going with a ER over a Beckets head was pump size and I have also read a few threads from People who have used both, all of then preferred the ER over the Beckets head. Now, I'm sure there people who have used both and prefer the Backets head I just haven't heard from them, Yet! Maybe I can get Andy to send me one to try out for a few months

Yeah, the CS8-3 is 528.00 and the MyReef is 250.00 plus the pump. Depending on the pump the difference can range from the Myreef and Mag 18 costing a total of 360.00 or the MyReef and Iwaki 55 costing 545.00....prices may vary

FWIW I didnt measure under my stand before ordering my CS8-3. When I got it and realized I only had 29 1/2" I made some adjustments. First broke out the bottom panel on the stand, then cut out the carpet under my sump, the carved away at the floor boards untill I had enough room. Now I am moving out of my apartment in a few weeks! Talk about a major covor up job. Euro-reef skimmers great skimmers but Aqua C will be just as good. Really though get a Aqua-C, email Jason he will be more then happy to help you.

Trust me, if you can hold off you will be surpised.

I have the MR-2 on my system and we have similar sized systems. It does a super job! I also only run the skimmer 12hr per day now that I have a refigium. So that balances out the monthly cost closer to the small pumped skimmers. The MR-2 will handle your tank great.

Like I said I was so close to ordering the ER, but after the same thing happended to me I decided to go with a more truthful advertiser. Hey, I was told that maybe they (ER)were just trying to squeeze more money out of me, like that makes me feel better about the company

Email Andy, you wont regret it

What about 2 skimmers? Say, an EV-180 and a PM Bullet 1? Or even go up a notch and get an EV-240 (which would be fine by itself), with another skimmer? It would solve your height issue, and with 2 different skimmers opperational, it should keep your water more consistantly skimmed.

Check out Calfo's coral prop. book, he reccomends 2 on every tank.
