Is Reefs.org drying up?

jamesw makes a good point: reefs.org is a comprehensive website and an excellent resource. Some of the threads sometimes get a bit out of hand but that can happen on any board. Reef Central's main advantage is the presence of Ron Shimek and the recent addition of Eric Borneman. But reefs.org has a large contingent of very knowledgeable, experienced reefkeepers who post frequently, especially if the topic is interesting.
Personally, I like all the boards and find that each is superior in one way or another. IMO reefs.org is one of the best.

FWIW,I consider the various websites as part of a large library of information.Although you may have a favorite book(website) doesn't mean you shouldn't check out a different one on occasion.Enjoy the differences and the simularites of the various reef related boards.I for one don't want a library with just one book!
This, RDO (Hmmmm.....I kinda like that acronym), is my only choice. I, like many on this board, use the knowledge base extensively and find them very helpful. This board is the only one I visit on regular basis.
Frankly, even if I want to frequent other sites, I can't, as I have a VERY busy work schedule (like all of you) and it is already amazing that I gets to have time to browse this site. With all these business deals that flood in for the third quarter and all those government and school bids that I have to oversee, I do not have time to browse anyother sites. If I have to pick one to stay, RDO is it!
Oh, I just have to say thanks to all on this board. Thank you, and without interacting with all of you, I wouldn't find anger management classes so useful!

Gee, I'm one of the few people still posting here with a VERY LOW member number. I admit to not posting much any more because I find many of the topics to be repetitive.
I have to agree with James, Chucker and the others in a couple of things:<UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>Reefs.org is much more multi-dimensional than just the discussion board.<LI>Not enough people use the search function.<LI>Like life itself (and our aquariums!), discussion boards "cycle".<LI>As my experience reefing grows, I post less and less questions.<LI>Finally, there's only so much time in a day; I can only do so much and posting/reading here has fallen on my list of priorities!</UL>
I'm finding my interest in my reef tank waning at this time. I'm going through a major change in my life (wife left and it's her fault I ever got involved in reef keeping!) and my reef tank has suffered. (Despite the neglect, I still find my sps and other corals growing VERY well, which leads me to think that these organisms aren't as "delicate" as purported to be!)
This is a fine site for information on the hobby. I shall frequent it as long as I'm interested in reef keeping!

Hmm...yet another "my board is better than your board" thread? Please people, can't we all just get along?
I consider myself a personal friend to a few of the people behind reefs.org (past and present), and I can tell you this...you'd be surprised just how much these people put of themselves into this hobby. Rather than nitpicking about which site is better and why, we should be thankful people such as those running reefs.org (and reefcentral.net) exist. My hat is off to Rick, James, Kevin, and all the others within reefs.org, and I thank you for all you've done and are planning to do.
There is plenty of room to support both sites. Threads like this only serve to divide us rather than bring us together. Is this what we really want or need?

I don't know what this site used to be like...I just started looking at it in the last few months. I do know that in that short time I've gotten a lot of good advice from folks out there and learned much more than I would have without it. So, thanks to everyone out there for the insight you've shed and the knowledge you all have shared. BTW, I did not realize that there was a function to search through the postings until I read this thread. I think I'll check that out.

First of all, if this site has made just one person make a better informed decision than they might have made without it, it has served its purpose. The more people we reach, the better- it only serves to broaden the education base of the hobby as a whole.
It's been said before, and I'll say it again- do not underestimate the power of a search engine! It is very likey someone has posted on the same topic before you- check and see. Search the UBB, and use the search function on any of the non-UBB pages to find things in the library.

When I started 6 mths ago my LFS told me to get info from RDO
I have looked at other sites and can say that I enjoy this board much more. I like the people that post, give advise and trust what they say. Other than the "Ask Dr. Ron" section and the spell check
I prefer reefs.org. The advice is very detailed to the point that I save much that I read so I can reference back. If you read this board and follow the advice of the experienced reefers you will have a great tank. I feel that some people think after a couple of months in the reef world they are experts and do not really listen to what the veterans have to say, it is more like a High School debate class. This board has saved me from making costly mistakes and guided me to make sound choices as to what are appropriate fish and corals to have for my system. The library is fantastic and I can read and study for hours at the amount of info that is available. When something happens in my tank that is not right, I jump on my laptop and post for help, and always have answers from people that calm my panic when I don't know.

I thought quite a while before starting this thread, because I knew some would take offense to it. But if this is a TABOO SUBJECT, then my bad.
The purpose was/is to call attention to the lack of traffic, cyclical or not.

I do find that the information outside the UBB at reefs.org is excellent and usw it all the time.
However, I find myself spending more time at the boards at reefcentral.com because of that board's search feature. The rc board goes back about around one year rather than a few months here. This keeps any repetitive questions down, IMHO. I usually search for old information there; while here at reefs.org, I keep try to keep up with current conversations and the marketplace.
Both boards, however, should stress the use of the search function.
On a final note, thank you for your hard work here.

I'll second the search engine issue. I was trying to find a few things the other day and found the search engine to be a bit lacking. It would be nice if it was a bit more powerful and could pull out older threads.
I understand if this may be due to web hosting/server issues, hopefully we can get better capacity in the near future.

One observation:
Unless there are very few threads on a BB, after a year or two, nearly every straightforward question has been answered. Some have been answered hundreds of times.
That leaves long time readers either reading the same 156 questions to find something new, or just skimming the titles, and not posting much.
This is not special to reefs.org, or any other board. And it's not an indication that the board has "declined" somehow. The same discussions that were once new and exciting to a particular member simply become "old" to those who have read it a lot.
And perhaps now with more posters than ever, there's even more of the "old stuff" to wade through.

I've been here for a while, checked out the other sites and am not impressed. A while ago Dr. Ron, and occasionally Borneman (Biogeek?) posted with some frequency, even Sprung posted during the marine snow controvercy (i talked to some kent sales reps at the store and they were saying "yeah, reefs.org just totally trashed marine snow", dont mean to bring up old news but it just goes to show that this board is pretty darn popular). What happened to Dr. Ron and Borneman? Where'd they go?!
When i first started i'd have like 3 threads going every day, but now i find myself creating a thread once or twice a week if that. I agree, the questions here have gotten repetative but i'll still try to help, maybe without much earnest but i'll still do it! I'm just starving for a good debate thread that hasn't been coverd 304307 times.
I agree that the search engine should be used more frequently by everyone and i am reminded that everytime a temperature or salt survey pops up.
Maybe the reason there aren't so many posts this time is both good and bad. The old members have learned so much that they post their own questions infrequently and are sick of the repetativeness of the newer questions. I dont know, but i know it's partly because of the summer because its usually deader than dead at my LFS...

Did any of the people moaning here read the posts on Calcium and the use of vinager recently? briefcases imputs were very good certainly up to Randy Holmes Farley type replies and it generated a lot of interest.Maybe you all new that stuff already from Bingman but briefcase made it very understandable for us non scientists. Yes there is a lot of stuff that is from very newbies and why not? everyone has to learn and what seems interesting when you first start gets boring when you already know it but you can easily skip that stuff and just home in on what you want to read and maybe if you think that you know it all you should concentrate on answering some of the newbies questions just as others used to do for you.
