Ground zero

I have been at what is referred to as Ground Zero of the World Trade Center disaster for the last three days.I do not condone acts of violence against innocent American-Arabs living in our Country.I have been a Police Officer for the last twenty years. I have seen first hand the destruction.Unlike the arm chair politician or Monday morning quarterback;I have personally recovered bodies and body parts from the scene.I have had the unpleasant duty of looking into the victims wallets and seeing pictures of their loving children.I have inhaled asbestos and other contaminants during the process. Many Good,hard working people have died.I like my brother officers, firefighters,and EMS workers run towards danger not from it.The destruction of the World Trade Center is an act of war on our soil.Prolonged Retaliation is what is required to put an end to the extremists who openly proclaim death to our family and friends.I am a realist and know that this can not be achieved without the loss of innocent lives.I will pray for the innocent that may be killed in the middle east.Once again I am not in favor of violence for violence sake,but we must protect families and friends from the ever present threat that these people present to us,now and in the future.This is only my opinion. We have so much respect for all of you guys risking your lives to find thousands of people that are burried under the rubble. I appreciate that you posted here to let us know how bad it is there first hand. Good luck and don't give up! I can't think of a job more physically and mentally demanding as that.

Thanks for your work Anthony and I am sorry to hear about the loss of your friends... I am an agent on a federal search and rescue team in San Diego. The guys on my team are furious that the feds will not allow us to help out. I like my team mates have never felt so helpless before. Moral is at an all time low. We have even considered taking a leave of absence and working on our own down there. I realize our team is small in the scheme of things there, but to us it would make a world of difference. It is not like us to sit back....and watch...and wait. I am glad you are safe and getting the chance to rest. We may be out that way soon if we can swing it.

Anthony, Thank you for all you've done. I was moved by your post. You have said all the right things. It pains me to hear everyone say that they do not want innocent lives taken in our retaliation, but they have started a WAR by taking our innocent lives and like in any WAR innocent lives are taken. As ugly as war is it happens. Nobody wants innocent people to be killed but unfortunately these people have brought that on themsleves. It is such a shame that there is such an evil that thinks that destroying the lives of thousands of people is ok to get there point across. We have SO MUCH RESPECT for you and all the volenters that are in NYC and Washington DC who have work nonstop since the morning of the 11th to try to save as many lives as they could and try to recover the bodys of our beloved family friends and neighbors.
