Only in America. How despicable can some people be?

I was watching the news and saw a small blurb from the government warning people against scams. There are actually people out there who are taking advantage of the fact that so many are suffering. The scams that were reported are people are posing as rescue and relief workers and asking for social security numbers, and also, there are numerous false charities in action. Absolutely despicable. Oh, a blurb from Texas, apparently there are some merchants who have raised their prices on American Flags, don't know how much, or how many are doing it, but it's sad that at this time, business is still business.

Proud to be an American? Yes, still proud. Proud of some of my fellow Americans? Nope. Disgraced.

Apparently EBAY has stopped all bidding on World Trade Items. Apparently there are people out there trying to sell videotapes of the tragedy and pieces of the rubble.

Sometimes people can be trully heartless. I am in the U.S. Coast Guard and worked a 757 crash off the coast of the Dominican Republic back in 1996. While we were recovering bodies, some local fishermen were picking up bodies and removing wallets and jewelery.....then dropping the bodies back into the sea. Deplorable!

Luckily for us, the vast majority of America seems to be extremely supportive of the rescue workers, and victims families.

There was a report on CNN that they've discovered that a great deal of the money the terrorists used to live in America, get their pilot training, etc was earned through similar scams including internet and credit card fraud.

I saw that too..and thought it was awful...But what shines through is all the thousands of volunteers and workers who are out their risking their lives and helping out. What do you mean "only in America" ?? No way!

Agreed, not only in America...this sort of thing is common in every part of the world.

I was talking with a friend last night and apparently as she was escaping the terror with her coworkers she was actually mugged. A group of thugs were talking advantage of people as they were running away in terror and confusion away covered in soot. These thugs posed as a bunch of workers trying to help out and they cherry picked those who they wanted to mug and escorted them to the waterfront where they could wash their hands and face of the soot. When my friend got there she realized something was amiss, but it was too late. A group of men told her to give up her phone and any valuables otherwise she would be hurt. When a group of people can take advantage of others during a national tragedy it is truly despicable. Although she only lost her cell phone, earrings, and a 3K graduation watch, some people lost wedding rings, and more importantly their feeling of security.

The United States certainly does not have a monopoly on sick, twisted people. I think you'll find they can be found hidden under rocks or in slime pits throughout the world.

On my way home on Saturday (by rental car) I stopped to get gas and there was a car full of patriotic paraphenalia (SP??) that some folks were selling at ridiculous prices. It made me think of the money changers at the temple in Jerusalem...Sad, very sad.

I may have posted this someplace else - the NYC news was interviewing people that were staying in a Ramada Inn and Best Western both before and after all this - the room rates jumped $100 Tuesday night or they were quoted a price and then were unable to get the room for that price.
