Jeremy, unfortunately, you're right. 100k is unrealistic. How about 500k? 200k of which were *hardy yellow tangs*. And this was in '94 back when the hobby wasn't so popular..

Cappuccino has a good point and one I had alluded to earlier in the Industry forum. Bans are useless and counterproductive when the AVERAGE aquarist kills off most of the fish they buy, regardless of the "hardiness" of the species.

Some of us have to stop and realize that we are not targeting advanced aquarists and aquarists with access to resources like Jeremy at inverts.com or this board. These aquarists by their nature will not purchase difficult species because they know better. The targeted audience are those aquarists who go down to their local LFS or Petco and get bad advice from their LFS or Petco.

I encourage some of you to go down to your typical LFS this weekend and hang around a little. You'll notice that the average aquarist will walk in looking to buy X number of fish and will ask the owner for opinions. This is much different from how the advanced aquarist would decide on a fish BEFORE going down to the LFS.

Education is the only real solution. And it would be a more viable solution than banning a large portion of the currently imported species. I would rather see that we educate and license LFSs to sell livestock, regardless of the hardiness of the species. And require the LFSs to display industry literature on topics such as appropriate setups, suitability and requirements of certain species, etc. We would need an enforcement/licensing authority as well. Of course we would all do our part to report non-compliant LFSs.

I've often felt that in a perfect world that would be the solution.. but many states already make you be licensed and inspected to sell dogs/cats/birds/reps and even after complaints from the public little is usually done about stores that don't properly care for their animals. If they aren't going to shut down a place selling sick puppies/kittens/birds/lizards, they sure aren't going to be able to properly police the fish side.
