Good point about the overflow tube. Galleon, do you know why this side effect happens? Is the small air hole getting clogged?

Wombat, from what I've observed, it appears that, with age, the siphon begins to slow down right before it breaks, so instead of still pulling water fast enough to completely break the siphon, the out flow nearly equals the in flow and the siphon tube only slurps up a few bubbles, rather than completely breaking.

It must just be from growth inside the tube, right? Seems like a scrape of the PVC or just replacement of the whole pipe would fix the problem.

wombat,

The one Carlson we run is situated so its removable. The U-tube is chlorox and pressure washed once a month. It usually takes only a few weeks before its back to shortstroking. However, a modification that helps is to have the inflow of water swirl, like a whirlpool. this creates a low point at the center (where the open end of the siphon tub usually is) in the bucket/reservoir. This helps quite a bit.

Probably the most natural sounding surge device (not quite the quietest) is the reverse Carlson surge device, a la Kevin Carpenter.

When built properly, these devices can almost instantaneously remove 10-20% of the bulk system water, propagating quite a surge. Far more natural in appearance than Carlson's or Borneman's (I am aware that these two are intended to duplicated grove/forereef channel long duration surges, but most of these type surges I have seen or encountered were not quite that long).

Last spring when I was visiting a new store in the Bay Area they had several sizes of custom built surge devices that were both silent and bubble free. The owner Eddie is a great guy but you might have to buy a unit to get the secrets :) .

Kevin

That store is Tropical Paradise, one of the very few good LFSs out there. They use Carlson devices on all their coral tanks, I think like 5 or 6 in all.
