Help Identify this Turf Brillo type algae

This is over taking my tank. It is about 2 inches thick and tough like artificial turf. It feels like plastic. what is it?

Wow I bet a lot of people would kill to have their lawns look like that. Sorry I couldn't resist!! It looks like a clumping type of hair algae but I'm not 100% sure.

I have had saltwater tanks for over 20 years and have never seen anything like it. You have to break it off in chunks.

I've seen that a few times and while I don't know it's exact name we have taken to calling it "Awwwwwww Crap" (which is our usual response when asked to come help with a new tank). It sometimes requires pliers to remove parts. I am pretty sure it is related to maiden's hair the way it grows but looks a lot different.
