Was wondering can you make air stones out of white pine?? Tried one, but it did not work. Or is it another type of wood that they are made of?? I know they are cheap, but had some pine and just thought i would give it a try....
hi.
Limewood is the old-fashion air "stone." But since limewood is difficult to get, some people use basswood. Balsa does not work well, since it get "soggy" when wet, I heard...
Most skimmer use venturi because it is a lot more reliable than air stone skimmer. However, some of the most efficient skimmers are air stone type.
I buy basswood from a local hardwoods shop. It's cheaper than buying at the hobby and craft shops. My stones are 2"X2"X7" with a 7/8" bore so I need lots and the cost is important.
For those of you building your own air stones, try this! The ultimate in wooden airstones, and easy to make! I make a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 3" KW Awesome Air diffuser, driven by a Medo 0502, puts about 12"+ foam on my 6" CC skimmer!
Wombat,
I have a 5' tall skimmer that is 6" in diameter. I would need to use about 6 - 4" airstones. At the LFS 3" airstones are $3 each. Cost me around $20 to buy enough for a month. I costs me about $7 for each KW awesome air diffuser. Always a reason!
