dizzy:

It does look like a big mess.
It took me only seconds to come up with a solution easy to implement:

Exporters could store animals in tanks per location, not species.
As collectors bring in the catch all of it is simply put into tanks according to where it was collected.

Since everything from the exporter leaves in individual bags, it is simple and easy to put a location sticker on each bag.
As many creatures usually stay in that same bag all the way to retail, the problem is solved for the most part without red tape.

The exception would be animals not picked up still in the bag by the retailer (or in temporary transit storage) -- someone would have to make a note who came from which bag/location.

But wouldn't that make it really difficult to stock a tank? You'd only be able to add stuff that came from the exact same spot or area, and those animals get spread out all over the country. (ie a collector brings his harvest to the exporter where it gets split up as it sold to all the wholesalers, and then split again as it's sold to all the retailers), you'd have to travel all over the country to find something that would match your tank.

IMO the collection of wild caught animals will be banned before the information you are seeking is made available.

Sadly, you're probably right on the money with that one.

If we don't police ourselves to the highest extent possible, you can bet others soon will.......

Looks like there's no easy solution.. Implementing change in the current system would require particpation from nearly everyone which means not only different equipment but also different methods of handling.

Putting something effective in place is likely to lower everyone's profit margin at the current price and probably drive them right up out of the range of most potential hobbyists.

Definitely a sticky situation... I'm glad I feel comfortable with my LFS being conscientious and honestly informative.

What I do know is that when I worked for an import company at JFK in NY I saw, at every airline, reptiles and fish, sitting on the floor, in an ice cold "warehouse" wating to get cleared through PQ(pest inspectors). All bay doors were open and the heaters didn't have a chance. If every box had to be opened and examined there would surely be more deaths. The summers were the oposite end of the spectrum. At times the warehouse was well over 95*F. That stress would definately kill more specimens. I believe that the customer is ignorant and should research before any purchass. Not all the responsibility can be put on the wholesaler/retailer.

Thankyou!.......... It may very well be true,.that more fish and corals DIE waiting to be cleared by F&W and customs then any other part of shipping. Sometimes an hour can make all the difference and the temp. change out on the cargo bays can sock the animals more then the twenty hours in the bag.....I wish some of the "experts" would think these things through?
