Is this the anthellia(sp?) type or actual xenia? Either way xenia speices like iodine although I never use it. They can also quickly take over a tank. IMO the key to keeping xenia colonys from crashing is pruning berfore they get to thick.

Crashing? What's that mean? I'll take a pic later and post it.... that way you'll know exactly what it is.

Crash..means like.........ahhhhh.... die off, shribble up and die, crash and burn, fall, fallapart,go to pieces, destruction, croak, fallasleep, come down from high, pass out, come down from acid trip, unable to go on, or Metal Halides bursting over your open tank. Have Fun!

This is what I got........ I'm not sure what exactly it is. The LFS said it was cultured waving hand xenia.

How do you prune it? How do you know when it is too thick and needs to be pruned?

Just slice it with a sharp blade when you see it growing in a place you don't want it.

IMO that is red sea pom-pom xenia. Atleast that is what it looks like to me, that is a nice xenia that takes over the tank less and grows into larger single colonys then most xenias.

Very Nice

How much did you pay for it?

$54. You know, the LFS told me to put direct water flow on it, but I found when I did that they were kinda being batted down. When I turned the powerhead away from it, they started to "shake, shake, wiggle, turn" over and over again. I think I like that more.

50 bucks is a hefty price but then ten bucks is a steal for the amount it appears you have.

i just pull the xenia off areas i don't want it, the razor thing is unnecessary for stalk removal,IMO. if you are trimming branches off a large colony i usually use scissors.

if you have the right conditions this stuff will flourish and you can sell some back to your LFS thus reducing your total expense.

BTW, if you don't want that rock glued there, you could set it next to an overhang and this Xenia will climb it to whatever high point you determine.
in otherwords...it tends to wander up in a grasping sort of fashion.

Through the hospital I can get surgical forceps, scalpels, all kinds of scalpel blades, syringes, needles, etc. Makes working with corals much easier :) Also makes killing aiptasia much easier when you can inject them with real needles instead of those plastic ones they still in the stores. I think I'll prune these with a scalpel, but I'm still not sure what I need to cut. I guess I'll just let it grow bigger before I take another pic and ask you guys again :)

If they split to another rock you can just yank them apart. I've got lots if anyone wants to pay me $54 for some :D ...

Sorry about that,
It looks good.
I would try to isolate it from any other corals you don't want it to take over.
I have found that the direct flow it needs isn't that strong.
Keep in mind, it will "walk" with the flow.
Mine walks with the current about 1/4" per week.

Quick, kill it while you have time! 8O Seriously, it looks nice. They are very entertaining to watch IMO. I have some myself, but beware, they grow like weeds.
