alfa ...... you'v done it now? you'v mentioned.....yes....... the magazine which did'nt exist?........................ only joking! i disagree with that 2 not enough.. picture this 100 reef keeper's in all there glory! along comes MR newbie, know nothing, impressionable, looking for advice ect ect. And he asks a question, just like on here actually? And he will recieve, guaranteed 100 conflicting answers! what does he do! for a start he or she is probally more confused/bewildered than they set out with! we can all give advice, wether its from knowledge we'v read or learned through experiance! my answer is this only take advice after you'v seen the proof of the pudding as they say. so take a look at there tank first! then youll see wether its expriance or bull !!!! talking. and im not being confrontational this relates to all of us not just newbies

GT,
I only talk about my experiences unless otherwise stated.
I think more than one Yellow tang in a 220 g is not what I want in my tank. I did not say anything about weather one can keep them alive. I did not say that he cannot mix tangs together. Only that I would not keep more than three tangs in a 220 g tank. I did not say anything about other people can keep them alive in smaller tanks. Heck, I keep a Salifin, a Yellow and a Purple in a 100 g tank before. They live for several years and all very fat. I took them back to the LFS when I have to move from Seattle to Corpus Christi. I did not know much then. They were always fighting. I would not do it now but have done it before.
BTW, You should at least spell other people's name correctly and capitalize them like you should.

I watch these YT discussions with interest

-Really, what is it that is so interesting to you about these particular discussions?

- and amazingly - it now seems we're now down to 1 YT per 220g! Steve - what's the basis for your recommendation?

-The basis of my recommendation was summed up quite nicely by Minh.

And honestly - in your opinion - should we even be keeping these fish in our tanks at all?

-Sure.

Posted by Alpha:
I read an article in the latest addition of Practical Fishkeeping that stated that Yelow Tangs should be kept in a matched pair.

-Hmmm, just one more reason for me not to waste my money on this magazine.

Les Holliday divulged his findings on reef fish reproduction from a recent conference and it clearly suggested YT should be kept in pairs,

-Who in the world is Les Holiday???

however I have seen the aggresion between 2 introduced together in a dealers tank (admittedly it was a small tank).

-There you go.

Like the person posing the original question, I'm simply interested to hear others' opinions on the subject.

Or others' summations of others' opinions.

-Yea, right.

Or others' summations of others' opinions.

-Hmmm, when another person has already taken the time to write out a reply which matches your thoughts, you think it would be wise to write it all out again? Whats your point??

Alpha as you can see all except your fellow countryman, Garry Thomas, do not support 5 tangs in your tank.
You either go with blood or experience.
It is your choice.
Good luck with your new tank. Go slooooooooow and continue to ask questions here :)

I agree with naesco that an advice of keeping Yellow tang in matched pair in aquarium is clearly poor advice.

-Oh, I never heard of him.
Minh is a very well respected hobbyist from the US as well as naesco from Canada, I am sure not many have heard of them in Britain either.

-Are you asking me this question? Seriously? If you are then I would say that I have no idea, please enlighten me if you wish.

1 British gallon = 1.20095 US Gallons

so

175g UK = 210.16625 Gallons US

well im pretty sure (78"x24"x28") is a standard 180gal. us tank.
just FYI and all

72"x24"x24" is the standard 80 g tank. 4 cubic foot is about 60 g.
Minh
PS: I meant 180 US gal
and 8 cubic foot[b/] is about 60 US gal.

I suppose your going to now say keeping a tang in a 40g (US) is ok too, like in this thread?:

http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23674

Don't think red-slime is going to be his only problem in the near future. GArry, do you have a picture your willing to show that shows these tangs all living together happily in that tank? No sunken in marks etc.? Prove us wrong, pics say more than 1,000 words.

-Nope.

perhaps a bit of green eye? mines bigger than yours ECT,

-Yea thats it Gary, everyone is jealous of your tank  . No one here cares about stocking levels for aquariums, we just post here because we are so envious of you.

Steve,

I could explain what I'm trying to say, it would be that I sometimes get a little tired of hearing all the preaching from the "holier than than thou" crowd. It almost seems like a certain group have gotten together and agreed to attack anyone who does anything outside the limits of a certain set of rules that they have determined is best for the hobby. It just seems strange to hear all this preaching from a group that is mostly non-God.

-Attack??? Hmmm, it seems that you have determined what encompasses an attack, would you be a member of the "anti attack police"?
BTW, do you consider Gary as a member of the "thought police"?

-Once again I don't follow what you mean here, please explain.

Hello Dizzy

Have you noticed here that there always seems to be GT thats getting the sh*t. It really seems to be that a few guys in particular don't like the fact that somebody has more experience than they have themselves. Whether it be through a bigger tank or pure hard work. I had this sh*t on the Moorish Idol thread, about my tank didn't exist, pics to prove etc. well want size is yours Naesco? You seem to be doing lots of flogging let's see some pictures of your tank, this is the second time of asking. Don't be embarrased if it's smaller than mine.
