I have read the thread and I think people need to remember that this is but a forum message board. Its not up to Reefs.org to solve the Hobbies problems. Its up to the people that frequent the board if they so choose. I think Reefs org does their part by offering a venue in which to communicate with other reefers about the concerns of the hobbie and to share information that helps us all.

Come to Reefs and leave with whatever knowledge you can, but don't expect the moderators to fight the causes you feel should be fought. Especially when it may hit them in the wallet. Just be thankful you have a place better then most to express your ideas (such as this one) with so little interference.

i read the link and all i have to say is let the buyer beware. i do a ton of home work on companys before i buy from them and as for internet companys they say anything they want to make a buck thats why we live in the great country of america. i generally buy fish from my lfs, i have a good relationship with the guy that orders the fish he will order me what ever i want and i let them sit at the lfs for a week and i watch them closely to make sure their feeding and in good health, if there not i dont buy them. selling tainted fish is wrong but what can you do to be certain besides to go catch them youre self....if anybody in se/central michigan wants healthy fish i can hook you up at my lfs they usually get very healthy fish and i watch them all personally before i buy, you should all do the same. good luck! also as for them(reefs.org) removing a sponsor that is crazy, its like cutting off your hand. it is hard to get sponsors so unless you want to pay a monthly fee to access this great site forget about it.

ill that is a cop out.
The board is for the betterment of the member reefers and the critters we keep.
I do agree that this cannot be only reef.orgs fight.
Chucker I would ask you to contact the other boards so that the issue of dishonest or misleading sponsor advertising is dealt with in a united front.
All the boards in unison should address this.
The sponsor could leave one board but cannot leave them all or they will be out of business.

All boards in unison should give them 60 days to clean up their act after which time they are dropped as sponsors by ALL boards.

Hi everyone,
I've read the 7 page thread link and it sounds bad. I've been in the hobby for around 15 months now. All I used to know about marine fish is that they come from reefs and I can buy them from my lfs. As amazing as they are, I wonder if I should been involved in keeping them because the marine hobby is getting big and this IS having an large impact of reefs!
What I'am curious about is what EXACTLY does cyanide fishing do to reefs and fish? It's obviously bad, please tell me and other new reefers what the process involves and what are the side effects/damages caused by this action.
Please remember that this is a forum mainly for people to share experiences with marine husbandry. The banners are not run by reefs.org, their only links. Reefs.org are being sponsored by online companies. If you have a beef with these companies leave Reefs.org out of it.
Please educate us on cyanide fishing because it's extremely relevent
and we then can decided on where is the right place to make our orders. It starts with the forum users not Reefs.org IMHO.

So lets start with the process of cyanide fishing, whats the deal?

(in layman's terms for the new guys!)

To answer Reapers question in a nutshell.
Indonesian and Phippinnes fishers use a bottle of cyanide and squirt it on the reef. ALL coral and other life dies and over 50 per cent of the fish.
The other 50% is gathered and taken to the beach where another 25% die.
The balance is shipped to Phillippine wholesalers who ship them to stateside wholesalers who sell them to lfs and online stores.
Mostly tangs, angels and triggers are involved.
We reefers have to ask those who sell us the fish where they are from and whether they are net caught.
If we are concerned about the answers, we should demand to see the invoice.

It is no wonder that so many of these fish only survive for a few months in our tanks

There ought to be a law

There is. There ought to be enforcement.

Asking to see the invoices probably won't help, because countries of origin are rarely if ever listed on LFS invoices.[/quote]
