Hi everyone!
I am thinking of adding one more fish! I think an angel (lemonpeel, bi-color, etc.) or tang (yellow, purple, etc.). My tank has been set up just over a year. I know that many angels are not reef safe. I have a few soft corals and plan to add more. I also have read about tangs getting head and lateral line erosion. I don't think that I could add two more fish with what I already have in there...fear over-stocking! I'd really love to add a pretty fish with some yellow coloring, who would get along with the other tank inhabitants! What do you all think?

Sorry...just noticed that my tank info (I had set-up to automatically come up) isn't completely specific on the fish! I have:
1 orchid dottyback
2 false percula clowns (tank raised pair)
1 pink-spotted shrimp goby
2 blue damsels
plus the clean-up crew!

Hello Madame! The thing with the angels has more to do with the large Pomacanthids! Many of them will eat sponges, polyps, etc.! Those of the Centropyge genus' are generally better in reefs, but can be more touchy in terms of requirements.

I would recommend something like a lemon-peel Centropyge, or a Zebrasoma scopas tang. I have a real affinity for the Z. scopas, myself, I find them to be sublimely beautious! :D

:D MadamePoisson,

First, you still have room for a couple of more fish in your 90 without overcrowding.

Second, I would highly recommend Scott W. Michael's book, Marine Fishes, 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species. ISBN 1-890087-38-6.

Every serious saltwater aquarist I know has a copy of this book. The selection is easier once you use this valuable reference as a guide.

IMO, I would avoid the Lemon-Peel Angel due to its reputation and go for either a Coral Beauty or Flame Angel.

As for the tang, a beautiful bristletooth tang such as a Kole would be very attractive and functional in your 90 gallon reef

The Kole is a perfect tang for "smaller" tang tanks, i.e., only 4 feet long. I have one in my 75 and he's healthy, beautiful, and fun to watch. Also, he's stayed the same size (3-4") over the past year, despite having a full belly most of the time. Note that he's a bristletooth tang, so he will eat your nori and scrape microalgae on his own, but won't touch macroalgae like caulerpa.

i agree with the lemmon being questionable, i have one in my 120 fish only tank and he nips at everything. on the other hand my flame in my 90 reef hasent touched a thing.

You know, if your param's are stable and good, you could very easily go with a Forcipiger longirostrus or F. flavissimus, too.

I'll also STRONGLY recommend Bob Fenner's "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist". This book covers issues regarding suitable marine animals in a way no one else has.

As someone who's worked with him, I believe he really knows his stuff. Along with our library here--> http://www.reefs.org/library Bob has a good site with database here--> http://www.wetwebmedia.com

Hey MadamePoisson,

8) I have 3 pygmy angels (lemonpeel, cherub, golden) and they all get along. my cherub is the oldest (2yrs) and my golden and lemonpeel are about 1.5 yrs. All are fat and healthy, haven't had any prob's with any of them. Oh, and I also have 7 tangs (sailfin, hippo, yellow, powderbrown, convict, kole, scopas) the oldest is the yellow (4.5 yrs) and the youngest is the convict (1.5 yrs) and yes they all get along. And talking about over crowding, last I counted I have about 24 fish total and yes, my tank is a reef tank. Well hope this helps.

Gobyman, if you're having this much success, then I think it would be a terrific contribution to the hobby if you could outline your acquisition, acclimation, and establishment procedures. If you have the time, of course.

 seamaiden,

Not sure on what specifics will help, but here goes:
oh, yea I must of miss counted before, I actually only have 21 fish total (is that still considered alot??) heres the break down of what fish i have with ages:

tangs
yellow (4.5)
scopas (4.5)
hippo (3.5)
sailfin(3.5)
powderbrown(3.0)
kole(2.0)
convict(1.5)

Dwarf angels
Cherub (2.0)
Lemon (1.5)
Golden (1.5)

Misc fish
Royal gramma (4.5)
Green chromis (4.5)
bangaii (2.5)
pajama cardinal(3.5)
seaweed blenny (3.0)
tidepool blenny (3.5)
maroon clown (1.5)
dragonet scooter (2.0)
dusky jawfish (2.0)
Banner butterfly (1.0)
fathead anthias (6 months)

well I think thats it for the fish, please excuse the spelling. Heres my tank spec's (I thought I listed it under my profile before...oh well  ) :

180g (acrylic) with dual internal overflows and 6.5" deep sand bed (1 " caribsea medium and rest is Southdown),280 lbs liverock , 2 Iwaki MD70's(one pulls water from the tank and other the is return to the tank), 15w UV, DIY skimmer,Korillin 3002 calcium reactor, 33 gal RODI resivoir (barracuda 100gpd RODI).

Lighting: all URI VHO: 3 Icecap ballists (2 430's & 1 660)
4 6ft bulbs @160w ea. (2 aqua sun & 2 atinics)
4 36" bulbs @ 95w ea.(50/50)
total watts: 1020w @ 5.6w per gal.

Heres my sump room specs(all hard plumbed in a different room):
2 50g rubbermaid agricultral tubs (horse troughs), top sump is a refugium with 4" sand bed,80lbs liverock, calupra and 10 hawaiian red mangrove trees. the bottom sump is my mixing sump(its gravity feed from the top sump) and is where my calcium reactor drips into and were I add supplements sometimes.

As far as acclimation for the fish I usually follow the norm:

Float bag for about 15 minutes for temp stablization and then put fish in a seperate container and drip for 45 minutes and then put them in the tank( and I never put any of the LFS water in my tank- I just dump it out)

Background history: I've been running this tank since April 1999, I actually started with a 58g Oceanic reef-ready tank in March of 1998, but I got a good deal on this 180g(used) so i moved up to a larger tank and transfered what I had in my 58g to the 180g. I did all the plumbing and mounting the lights myself (guess 16 yrs in the military made me handy with tools :) )

We'll thats about all i have for now, hope I haven't bored anyone to much :? I'll try to post some picks sometime soon, If anybody wants some pics emailed to them let me know...take it easy 8)

Gobyman...BORED? Hardly! We live, breathe, and eat this stuff 'round here!

Thanks for all that information, don't be surprised if you get lots of pm's filled with questions.

Also, we like pics here, too.
