bubbles in the skimmer...i plug it in and the bubbles spraying out of the output inside the skimmer are huge and very few...its pumping plenty of water, but not doin its job. i see photos of skimmers with big tornados of bubbles inside....this looks like my fish are farting inside the skimmer and its spirally slowly to the top

that is the difference between a 100 dollar skimmer and a 300 dollar skimmer. you could probably up the action with an airstone. which is what i am doing with my excalibur (similiar to yours). real PITA i am upgrading real soon.

I donno, a $100 and a $300 skimmer are suposed to do the same job... Yes, some better and some worse but this skimmer sounds like it couldn't possibly work at all !! I would try taking the thing apart and look for clogs...

On my first tank I had a small skimmer that was powered by a RIO 600. It would slowly start performing worse and worse. The problem was simple to correct with regular maintenance -- The Rio for skimmer use has two black rubber air hoses. One is the long one that hangs outside the tank/sump to suck the air into the pump. The other is a very short little section of hose on the bottom of the pump. Both of these hoses, but especially the small section get two problems:

(1) they slowly fill with crystalized salt - simply removing both hoses, soaking in hot water and cleaning them out does wonders every month;

(2) they dry out and become hard (again, especially the small underwater section) and restrict air flow - you must replace the hoses. Costs about a buck for new hosing.

I hope this helps solve your problems.
